FRUIT AND PRODUCE ■fI'ELMNGTON MAEKETB. The strong inquiry which sot in last wwu for apples, also pears, has continued, particularly lor the lormer frait; as a matter of fact values have advanced, and at tlio sales yesterday choice Doughertys realised as high as 14s a case. quantities have come forward, but despite Uus the inquiry continues strong, and very satisfactory, prices are ruling and growers must find at the present time that the local market is one of the most profitable in the Dominion. Many varieties have come into favour, more so this sea/son than in the past, notably Borne "® a ?" ties, Kyruera and Jonathans. The fairly large shipment of pears which arrived from Victoria and Tasmania at the dose of last week lias brought with it a slightly weaker tendency locally, at the same time the prices now ruling cannot bo considered but in every way satisfactory. Two shipmem/ of Island fruits are due this week; the first lot is expected to arrive here on ■Thursday from the Cook Islands, per s.s. Manuka. ‘As the season for oranges in. the Islands should now bo well advanced some prime duality oranges, also bananas, should come to hand; the market being bare of these fruits, and the general supply of all lines of fruits being far short of requirements, a strong inquiry should repilv Fijian bananas are du<* hi-*** on Friday or Saturday. The steamer from tlie Fijian group was two days late in departing from Suva, and in consequence will not reach port until as just stated. In lieu of Thursday. It waa noticed that the lunches of bananas from Suva on the occasion of the last shipment showed jxcoilent quality, ,an indication that the hurricane which did such devastating damage some eight months back is no-v entirely a matter of the past. The demand for local lemons and passions is strong, as the supply arriving from Australia is meagre. The usual shipment of Now South Woles fruits is cue xo-Uay from Sydney and citrus lines are looked Jorword to, to arrive. Apples, choice favourite dessert, 11a sd, to 13d case, prime 9s 6d' to 11s, other varieties ,; e to 8s; cookers, prime 6s to 7s case, good 4s to ss; pears, choice dessert 10s 6d to 12s case, prime 8s to 9s, stewing choice 7s to Bs, inferior 5s to 6s; tomatoes, 4s xo 5s half case; lemons (local), 6s to 7s case; passions, 4s to. 5e box; Cape gooseberries, 3d to 3£d lb POTATOES AND ONIONS. Heavy supplies of potatoes are , still available in the local market, and operations therefore with the south have been restricted to some extent. In consequence of this potatoes are now being pitted to a very large degree. The Mokola, from the Bluff, aid not have a single bag of tubers on Friday. Advices from South land are to the effect that values in that quarter have now been reduced, as it has been found that business was being entirely confined to Canterbury, and Otago. In these districts crops are reported to be very large, this together with' good Southland yields would lead one to the opinion that prices will rule low for some time. A slight inquiry-is being met with for seed potatoes, more particularly tor early varieties, such as Early Bose, Beauty of Hebrons, etc. As yet there are very few offering from the south, but as l the season progresses increased business will shortly result. Table potatoes ’ •tre ruling at from £5 to £5 lus per ton, according to condition. The market for onions is practically unchanged. Values arc still ruling at 72s 6d f.0.b., south. The Mokoia landed last week a shipment of onions, which opened up in excellent condition. OTHER VEGETABLES. The demand generally for all lines of vegetable© is particularly good. French beans, cauliflowers, and cabbages are meeting with a special demand, whilst for mushrooms there is a largo outlet. Cauliflowers, choice 8s to 10s sack, prime 6s to 7s; cabbages, choice heavy 4s to 6s sack, prime 2s to 3a; turnips, 2s 6d iO 2s 6d sack; swedes, 2s to Za fid sack; pumpkins, 3s fid to 4s 6d sack; beetroot, 3s fid to 4s 6d sack; carrots, 5s to Aa sack; spinach, 2s to 3s case; marrows, 2a to 3s sqck; French .beans 7e to 9s naif sack; broad beans, 4s to 6a sack; celery, 2s to 3s sack; mushrooms, 3d to 4d lb. EGGS. Values for fresh are ruling at la 9d to te lOd per dozen, and preserved at Is 2d The demand remains fair, with a large quantity offering. , SOUTHERN GRAIN AND PRODUCE PRESS ASSOCIATION. ' OHRISTCHDEOH. May 23. The weaker tone in the London and Australian wheat markets has been reflected locally, and buyers are n6t very keen to do business except at reduced rates. There is less business passing between merchants than last week, and few farmers are disposed to sell at 3s 3d, which is now the best offer on trucks. The only line of consequence changing hands during the last day -or two was 1000 bushels of Bordier at 3s 2id. at a country station, the quantity being barely prime. There is no change to note in oats, and chaff keeps firm at 85s on trucks. The potato market is still quiet, but there are a few buyers at 655, Offerings are, however, not very free, aa pitting of the cron is new well forward. LIVE STOCK SALES MABTON.
