REMOVING TREE STUMPS BY EXPLOSIVES
Some interesting photographs aro at present displayed in the “Times" window demonstrating how easily and effectively tree stumps can bo removed from the land by the 1 aid of gelatinous explosives. A representative of Mssrs Nobel's Explosives Co., Ltd., of Glasgow, recently visited Dannevirke and carried out a series of experiments before farmers and others who wore much interested to find how easily and inexpensively immense stumps, with their roots, could be blown clear from the land, thereby rendering it fit for grassing. As this mode of clearing stump land* becomes more widely known and appreciated, farmers and others will, no doubt, see it is to their advantage to avail themselves of it. Tlie first picture displayed shows a huge rimu stump, measuring 4 feet in circumference, on which six men are standing, and which has been prepared for blasting bv hobs having been dug under the roots,‘and in which are inserted tlio charges of gelignite. The second picture/ shows the shot fired, and the third tho ground cleared where the stump stood. It will he noted from, the last picture that there is not a vestige of the stump or roots visible, they having been blown clean away. Messrs W. M. Ba.nnatyno and Co. are solo Wellington agents for Nobel’s Explosives Co., Ltd., Glasgow, and’ they will be pleased to afford the fullest information in connection with, tree stump extraction to anyone interested in the subject.
