In connection with tne collision of the .steamers Wairau and Himitanffi in the Manawatu river, Mr Crabbo, manamng oireeror of the West: Coast Steam Bhip company, visited tho soon© of the wreck yesterday. Me states that a hole two feet by on© foot has ueen out in the Wairau just about midships. A diver and pumping gear arrived from Wellington today and pumping operations will be commenced as soon as possible. ',.The aftei hutch of the vessel is completely clear of the water, but the water reaches to the forehatoh at low water, Mr. Crabbo orgeats that most of tho coal will be got out, and there is little doubt the vessel will, be saved unless she slips _ off the oank into deep water. There is no insurance on tho cargo or the vessel. _ Mr Farmer, engineer of the Wairau, was in Palmerston to-day, but in view of tho marine inquiry he is reticent as to the -details of the occurrence. He. however, cliallonges the - story told by the officers of the Himitangi. The Wairau is welljclear of the fairway and do long as sue remains in her present position will not be-in anybody’s way, -■
