Mr E. W. Christmas, the wellsknown Antipodean artist, lias a picture in the exhibition of the Koy.'il Society of British Artists, now open in London. It js a Mew Zealand landscape, ‘‘The Valley of the Dart," and the ‘‘Daily Telegraph” speaks of it as "worthy to arrest attention.” Dr Frederic H. Cowen has been engaged to conduct the Mew Zealand concert of (he Festival of Empire at the Crystal > Palace in July. Dr Cowen is recovering ■from a serious illness, although he is still Cpuiined to his room. 'l'lio Dean of the London School of Clinical Medicine (postgraduate} at the Seamen’s Hospital, Greenwich,', is an Aucklander, Mr C. G. Clioyee, F.H.C.S. (Eng.), and a high compliment was paid to his work at the annual dinner of the School at Prince’s Restaurant Last Friday. Sir William Bennett, the eminent surgeon, replying to tho toast of the school, said an enormous amount of good was being done by the London School of Clinical Medicine, largely in consequence of the indefatigable labours of its dean; Mr Choyca. Lord Charles Beresford, who proposed tho toast, said that forty-seven of his old comrades, the naval medical officers, had taken tho post-graduate medical course at the school. Mr H. D. Broadhead, of Christchurch, a son of Mr Hy. Broadhead, late secretary of tho Canterbury Employers’ Association, has been recommended for an exhibition at Trinity College, Cambridge, awarded for classics. Mr N. M. Bell, of Canterbury College, Christchurch, has been recommended for a prolongation of his exhibition at Trinity College, Cambs., also awarded for classics. The lion. Sir Charles Christopher Bowen, Speaker of the Legislative Council of 1 Mew Zealand, has arrived in England, accompanied by Lady' Bowen and MiSs Bowen. Their headquarters while in England will bo with tho Bov. G. Bowen, of Theybergb Eectory, Eotherham. in Yorkshire. Tho Earl and Countess of Harrowby who. with their son and daughter, recently visited Mew Zealand, are expected to arrive in England next week after their voyage round tho world. Their daughter. Lady Frances Eyder, for-whose health the voyage was undertaken, is said to have benefited greatly from the trip. Mrs Crewe, ex-Mayor of Pahiatua, who is visiting London just now, proposes to give a series of lectures to farmers in the Midlands, illustrated with lantern slides. Mr T. E. Donne, who is chairman of the Mew Zealand Pageant Committee for tho Festival of Empire, has been appointed a member of tho festival executive. The Eev. P. W. Walker, F.8.A.5., and Miss Walker, of Auckland, were visiting London this week. They are making their headquarters at Hanslope Vicarage, Stoney Stratford, in Buckinghamshire. Mrs I*. L. McLaren, of Mastorton, accompanied by her eldest sou and her two daughters, is visiting tho Old Country in pursuit of health and pleasure. They arrived bv the lonic on March 13th, and after spending three weeks here they propose to visit tho Continent, returning to London for tho Coronation. Later they will visit Scotland and Ireland, but the length of their stay in these parts is at present uncertain. Mr A. F. Wilding annexed yet another lawn tennis championship this week, in the International Tournament at Cannes. In tile final round of tho singles championship the Mew Zealander showed capital form against F. W r . Eahe, and in spite of good volleying and driving on the part of the latter he was beaten in three straight sets: —G —l, 6—l, 6 —2. Mr and Mrs J. C. Sawers, of Waikato, ftvo at present sight-seoiug in London. They will stay in this country # until August next, and by that time, with the aid of a motor-car and a map, Mr Sawers hopes to have seen tho greater part of the British Isles. Mr Browning having retired from tho cable service. A number of Now Zealanders have gained honours in the class merit lists of the winter session at Edinburgh University.
