McKenzie presided over a large attendance. “TO BEAT THE REFEREE.” In moving that the annual report and balance-sheet be adopted, Mr McKenzie said that the report expressed all that they felt in regard to the appointment of referees. They might not get all they • wanted, but they must try and get as much, as could. During the past season it was suggested that lectures on the laws of Rugby, football should be given to players by members of.the Referees’ Association, Meetings were .held at which only about four or five players attended. The players’, attitude in the matter indicated that they did hot want to know the rules of the game. The position at present was that players were' not acquainted with the laws of football and had to beat the referees as often as they could. Last season a charge had been levelled by a captain of a certain olhb with reference to the conduct of a game. An investigation had been made into the matter and the result was that the referee had been, cleared of the allegation. GENERAL BUSINESS. The sixteenth report and balance-sheet of the Wellington Referees' Association (Association game) to bo presented at the annual meeting which will be held in the Y.M.C.A. next Monday night states that the past season was a record one so far as till© appointments of referees required was concerned, but the association was nearly always 'able to meet the demand; it is likely,, however, that the forthcoming season is’ going to be even more strenuous than the last, so it behoves every member to induce gentlemen who are capable of acting as, referees to join the association's ranks so as to meet the over-increasing demand for referees. The -fortnightly meetings of the association were exceedingly well attended, the average attendance being twenty-five at each meeting, which speaks well for the members' enthusiasm.

The - committee regrets that very few* if any, players have so far taken advantage of the regulation which permits them to attend meetings of the .association and participte in the discussion. “Tt is hoped that players will take a bigger interest in this in future,” states the report, “as it will be of great benefit not only to themselves hut to the referees as well.” Regret is also expressed that more oases of misconduct are being reported by members each season, but while this is apparently unavoidable as the game progresses, the committee would recommend to all referees the absolute necessity of having complete control of each match from the kick-off, and so endeavour to stamp out all ungentlemanly conduct from the outset. Satisfaction is .expressed that the New Zealand Referees’ Association has been placed upon an improved footing, and that it is endeavouring to considerably improve the standard of refereeing throughout the Dominion. Following upon a suggestion from tie association the New Zealand Referees’ Association has adopted badges for universal use throughout the Dominion.. A sntmly will shortly bo available.
