ALLEGED DEFALCATIONS

J. A. CAMPBELL BEFORE THE COURT. A FURTHER ADJOURNMENT. John Aloysius Campbell, appeared on remand before Mr W. G. Riddell in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday charged that:— II) On November 3rd, 1909, at Dunedin, while employed as receiving teller in the Bank of Australasia, ho received, on account of the bank, the sum of -£137 2s< ICd from Geo. Simpson, and did fraudulently convert the money to his own use.

<‘>) On November 21th, 1009, at Dunedin, he received MW 13s 5d from J. Peterson and Co. on terms requiring him to account for it to the Bank of Australasia and did fraudulently convert the same to his own use. . (3) On January sth, 1911, at Dunedin, he received -£76* 5s Id from J. Peterson and Co. on terms requiring him to account for it to the Bank of Australasia and did fraudulently convert the same to his own use. Chief-Detective Broberg prosecuted. Mr T. W. Hislop appeared for the Bank of Australasia, and Mr T- M. WUford appeared for the accused. Mr Wilford stated that he wished to apply for a further adjournment to Wellington. He had been in communication with Australia. Mr Hislop had received a cablegram from Australia that morning. It should have come to hand on Saturday, but through an error had been placed in the box of the Union Bank instead of the Bank of Australasia. He therefore asked for a remand for a week. In the event of matters turning out as he expected they would, he would have to ask for a further remand.

Air Hislop stated he had no objection to a remand being granted. Accused was remanded for a week- #

Mr Wilford asked that an alteration be made in the bail to admit of two sureties of .-cm

Ilis Worship agreed to this, and fixed bail afc ,£4OO, with one surety-of £IOO or two of J2OO.
