SIR RICHARD BARER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received March 20, 1 a.m-) ADELAIDE, March 19.. The death is announced of Sir Richard Baker, first President of. the Federal Senate. ' Sir Richard Chaffey Baker, K.C., was born in. Adelaide in 1842, and -was the eldest sot of the late Hon. John Baker, one-time Pro mier of South Australia (.descended from Sir John Baker, Speaker of the House of Commons in the reign of Elizabeth). '‘Johns’ Notable Australians” states that. the deceased wan educated at Cambridge and called to the Bar in 1864, when he returned to Adelaide. Ho hold office in South Australian Governments until he resigned to take a prominent part in the Federal movement. Re went to London in 1885-6 as a special envoy from the Australian Governments to negotiate a joint mail service contract and to conclude the agreement with respect to division of postal receipts between Britain and the colonies. He represented the Commonwealth at the durbar at Delhi in 1903, when King Edward was proclaimed Emperor of India, Sir Richard Baker was for many years chairman of the South Australian Jockey Club. Ho retired from politics about five years ago.
