LAWRENCE-ROXBURGH LINE
CONSTRUCTION WORK TO BE RESUMED. As a definite move in connection with fafio promised nosiuription of work on the Lawreuco-Roxburgb railway (a portion wf tho Central Otago lino) tho Government is calling tenders for constructing a tunnel of about twenty chains, a length of approach cuttings and certain road deviation work necessary at a point / twenty-nine - miles from the junction with tho main line. The tunnel is ’ situated at Big Hill, and it was the fact that this expensive work would have to Bo next umdoitaken which led the Goveminent early in 1209 to decide against going <m with the lino. Work, houover, couild not be am-pended until matters had been completed to a point where the construction could be utilised without dnnge.r of falling into disrepair. The consequence was that last year, despite the decision to cease work, £lf .too was spent on tho section. Operations have since been completely suspended, hut they will bo resumed on the contract - system when the tenders are dealt with fairly in March.
