INCREASED CAPACITY

PURCHASE OF TELEGRAPH LINE ACROSS CANADA. By Teleeraph—Press Asscelation—Copyright (Received January 25, 10.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 25. Mr Milward, manager for the Pacific Cable Board in the Pacific, lias returned hero from a visit to Canada. He snyn the Board now controls tho line of communication from Australia to Montreal, and has effected an installation -which will enable dispatched cables to be exipedited by 25 per cent.; in oilier words, it will be able to deal with 25 per cent, moro business in a given time. Mr Milward's mission to Canada was for the purposo of installing apparatus and taking over for the Board the lino previously leased from the Canadian Pacific Telegraph Company. The Board can now carry messages over 6100 miles, with only one land line, while the old system required three handlings. Asked if the innovation was likoly to lead to a reduction in rates within a reasonable time,. Mr Milward said: "It places us in a. better position with regard to reduced cost. TEe present weekly average over the Pacific lino is 42.000 'words. This has shown a marked continuous increase, and it is conceivable that if the Board increases tho carrying capacity of its cables to a largo extent and the public supply sufficient business the rates may bo affected." Referring to the All-Red route, Mr Milward declared that it would obviously b© an advantage to have a cable right through, as tho Atlantio cables at the i present time were practically controlled by American capitalists.
