PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 'TO-DAT. The Wellington provincial amateur athlete championships wi.l be held at the Basin Reserve this afternoon, when the programme to be submitted should result in excellent sport. The locai men arc reported to be in first rate form, and the presence of the v'.siting athletes should lend additional interest to the proceedings. Opie ai rived from Chxistchurch yesterday morning, and appears to be in splendid fettle. Ho will attempt to lower Woodger's New Zea.and record of 22 2-sseo for the 220 yards V. t>. Williams and Martis arrived from Wanganui last irght. The latter is reported t-' be a very "hot" man over the quarter and half-mile, and expects to break two minutes in the half-mile, so that his meeting with J. F. Wilson and Baxter should resu.t in a splendid race. The Wairarapa contingent arrive this morning, and they are reported to have among their number a dark horse" who will attempt to beat the New Zealand high jump record. Baxter, who recently ran two miles at Master; on in 10mm 4scc, will run in tho hall-mile and tho throe mile. It win be interesting to see if he can break tho New Zealand standard in the latter eveut. Yesterday's rain will have ttie effect el improving the ra.ing track.. which ' had become very baked owing to the recent dry weather. Mcvnly occupying the chair. • Tho Town Clerk notified that owing to. the uncertainty of the cricket fixtures no dates in February would be available for athletic meetings. ! The Port Nicholson Club wrote applying for February 25th to hold an afternoon sport* meeting on tho Basin Reserve. The club hud originally applied lor February 11th, but had. been informed by the centre that tho City Council could not grant this date owing to the uncertainty of the Cricket Association fixtures. Mr Travors, on behalf of tho Port Nicholson Club, urged that the centre apply to tho City Council for February 25th., and that it hack up the application with a deputation. He considered thait if the Cricket Association had arranged for dates earlier in tho season the club could have got, Euitable dates lor their meetings. * He thought they wore quite justified in opplying for tho date, and moved that an application for February 25th, and either March 9th or 11th be forwarded, backed up by a deputation from the centre to the reserves committee. This was carried. Messrs Burnett and Travers and the chairman were appointed to; constitute the deputation- . _ Communications were received from D. Wilson (Auckland), and H. Kerr (Taranaki) stating that they conld not visit Wellington to compete at the provincial championships. . Th* Hawera Club applied for permission to hold • a meeting on February Ist. Permission was granted, subject to the' club forwarding u, copy of its programme. ' Notification was received that the Napier Club had disbanded. Some discussion took plaoo regarding toe number of persons who flock on the ground during th" progress of sporta meetings, - greatly . intcif ering with the officials and blocking the view of tho spectators. It ■was decided that at the championship meeting to-day all persons other than offloials and competitors bo kept - out of the track enclosure.
