STEAMER PILOT SINKS

. MISHAP AT FERKY WHAKF. Shortly after 4 o'clock yesterday morning tlie Wellington Harbour Ferries, Ltd.'s, steamer l'iiot sank at her berth alongside tho ferry wharf. A Harbour Board nightwatenman observed that she was settling, and telephoned to Captain Watchlin, of the steamer Duchess. Mr Alex. Hall, engineer of the Duchess, hurried on board the Pilot, and worked energetically at the big hand-pump to keep the vessel afloat. His efforts were unavailing, although he stuck to the pumps to the last minute, and the Pilot went down at 4.20 a.m. Captain Watchiin arrived on the scene tare© minutes previously. The Pilot rests on the bottom with about four feet of her funnel above high water and with a considerable list to port The Pilot's boiler was blown down on the previous evening for the vessel's halfyearly examination and cleaning. Tho last man to leave the vessel stepped ashore at 7.30 p.m. on. Thursday, and no explanation for the mishap is forthcoming. On June 9th, 1907, the Pilot (then owned by the Union Company) sank at the Queen's wharf owing: to a leak. The vessel's hull has not since shown any signs of a leak. The Pilot, 27 tons register, was built twenty-six years ago of hardwood in'Australia. When the weather permits she will be refloated.
