THE MEAT TRADE

MR LYSNAR'S MISSION. At the conclusion of the formal business at tho - a-niiual -meeting -of the British-New Zealand Meat Company at Cnristchureh Mr C. H. Ensor "reierred to the statements made by Mr Lysnar. of Uisboriie, -regarding tho depreciation in frozen meat between the time it leaves the producer till ;it reaches the consumer. Mr Ensor said that if this depreciation amounted to .iiljUOtl.tlflO on the export Froni tlie Dominion, as ho understood Mr Lysnar alleged it was, then it was time that the farmers took some notice .of the matter, and, .did something to bring themselves ,in closer touch with—tlie- consumers. -They—ought to do. something to obviate that amount of depreciation, rjecauso it fell entirely on the shoulders of the producers. Tho chairman (Mr M. C. Orbell) concurred with Mr_Elisor, and remarked that a veal good organisation of farmers was neeo-wary to remedy matters. Mr John O'lljilloran hoped that this phase of the frozen meat trade Would.be dealt with by Mr Lysnar in tho acldress he ,is to give to farmers in Christehurcli on the 2-ltlt or 25th ifist., so that the question could be gone into and cleared up. Mr Ensor. in some further, remarks, said that ho did not .blame, the merchants for the large amount of depreciation, because they were- as* much interested as tho producers in stopping waste. Mr Orbell mentioned that some fifteen years ago,he was agitating for the. .more economical handling of tho.country's, frozen meat; and several conferences were held, at which he was liaeked u.p bv tho late Sir John Hall. The-result was, however, ..that. obstacles .jvere. placed -in his way, by those who had the reins. He blamed the farmers more tliaii anyone else for allowing the business to go on ns it had gone on at the time of which he ,was speaking He. admitted. that since then matters had greatly improved, but fifteen years ago "it \va.s a ras-cttll-v fihanie the way the business was conducted." He urged nil farmers to attend Mr Lrsnar's meeting and to discuss the matter fully with him.
