MANAWATU SUMMER MEETING

MADAM MADCAP WESTS THE STAKES. SUMMER HANDICAP GOES TO IRANUX. The Manawatu Racing Club made a-com* mencemout with the summer meeting yesterday at Awapuni. The weather was fine but dull, and the attendance about an average one for an off day. Tho course was in as good order as well could be imagined, while the enclosure never looked better. The magnificent show of flowers was the subject of ranch favourable comment, and was a fine object lesson to other clubs as to what can be done towards beautifying a racecourse. Mr Hartgill was in the judge's box, giving his decisions in his usual prompt and impartial manner. Mr E. H. Skipwith mado his debut as a starter, so far as Awapuni was concerned, and with one exception, referred to later on, his despatches were excellent. The racing on the whole was interesting, and punters must have about held their own, three favourites winning. Mr J. M. Johnston, the secretary, and his executive kept things going, the details being particularly well looked after, and everything went very smoothly. Those who attended went out well provided with the sinews ol war. the sum of £3290 being passed in at the totalizator windows, as against £6494 on the corresponding day last year. The ball tos set rolling with .the Trial Plate, and of the eleven on. the card five were scratched. Of the six left, the “Higbden” representative Allurement was made a better favourite than the Blenheim gelding Daunton. She was quickest to move in an excellent start, and led down the back from Parewanui and Beacon, with Brown Trent whipping in the field. Allurement was first into the straight, at tbc distance cried content, Hadron*' shooting to the front and winning by a length and a half from the ! fast-finishing Brown Trout, who might have turned tho tables had Ryan kept nearer the field in the early stages. Beacon was a length off third, followed by ’ Allurement, parewanui, and Bapnton. J. McLean rode a nice race. It being his first winning mount. Another field of half-anlozen sported site in the Tirltea Handicap, that smart sprintv Nauma-i carrying the most money. Mr Skipwith had a lot of trouble at the barrier, which most of the horses obstinately refused to face. At last they were sent off in close order* Naumai immediately streaking to the front, while Lord Soult snpplajited Warsong in. second place after going a furlong.- Naumai turned into the straight nearly two lengths the good, and, holding hia own to the judge's box, won by over a length from ’Waxsong, whe beat Lord Soult after a good go by a . neck. . Big Blast was two length* ou fourth, followed by Ascalon and Killaloo. Sir Antrim Was withdrawn from the Summer Handicap, leaving a field of eight, and of.these the uncertain Iranui was very stoutly supported, North East being also well .backed. - The start, which was oppo&iti the stand, caused a round of

applause. North East was soon out in l Ifront making play from Mataari, with; •Bandidrc-am and Iranui together xuxt. There was very little alteration round the back stretch, but at the bottom bend, •Iranui closed up, and a furlong from -home she was level with North East and ■Mataari. Ineido the distance Mr Hall’s anare shot away and won easily by a length and a half. Sandstream just beatdug North East on the post by a neck. Mataari was fourth, and Goodwin Park inoxt.

, Then came the big event, the Palmerston North Stakes, and the eight candidates wore closely scrutinised. Boanerges, Bootle, and Golden Ball were scratched.. There was any amount of money forthcoming for Polymorphous, although his preliminary was not impressive. Doarest'3 good form at Riccartou also caused her to bo well supported, hut Madam Madcap's poor showing at Feilding enabled hor < to 1 go out at a false price. A bcautifull start w?-s effected, Hermia being quickest! into her stride, with Madam Madcap next,, while, as usual. Polymorphous took some l time to get up steam, and was last after going a furlong. As they reached the bend, Hermia gave place to Madam .Madcap, while the favourite improved his position. Up the straight nothing had a chance with Sir George Clifford’s filly, wn> romped in over two lengths ahead of Hcrmv.i, with Polymorphous half a length back. Dearest was fourth. Sunburnt filth. Gold Bond sixth, and Vibration last. The time. imir. 14soc. chows that tbero was no loitering on the journey, and the winner must have improved greatly since her last effort at Feilding.

A ni"e field of eleven went to the post for the Highdcn Hack Handicap, and alter her fine snowing at "Wbodvillc, it was not surprising to find Lady Moutoa at a fairly short price, although Golden Age and Rill were well backed. Ahuapai was first to begin, and she led from Lady Moutoa for tw ’ furlongs, when Rill went into first place. Ajs they swung round the home bend. Rill was a clear length in advance of the favourite, and holding her own without any apparent effort, the San Fran filly ran home two length's in front of Lady who beat Golden Ago by a neck. GladfMc, Ahuapai, and Negative wore almost in line, about half a length behind, with the rest in Indian file.

"With Warsong an absentee, a field' c( five were left to contest the Awapu-ii Handicap, and with Boanerges looking well, it was not long before the public made up their minds which to back, money pouring in for the eon of Pilgrim’s Progress. The start was spoilt owing to but half the barrier rising, and Sea Queen, who was on the move, appeared to get a two lengths break. She led down the back from • St. Bill and Mon Ami, with Boancrgc.'j last. Positions were unaltered as the straight was reached, and although St BIH got to within a length of the leader, it was only on sufferance, Sra Queen winning very easily. Mon Ami was a length off third, with Boanerges next and Morco last. McDonald and .Emnaerson were each fined £1 by the starter. A capital field of fifteen went out to try conclusions in the Terrace Hack "Welter, San Lass, who had shown recent winning form, being strongly supported. The start was a good one. although Passive, who is a very badly-behaved marc at 1110, post, was left, while Jlurtagh failed to get Master Laddo going with the others. Bercola led off from Serenity, and these two showed tbo way to a bunched field along the back stretch. It appeared to be anybody's race as they entered the last furlong, but hero Sid. Reid sent San Lass along, and the San Fran mare, carrying her big weight in good style, won. hamlilv by a length from Floater, who finished fast. Bercola was a close third, with Lcolanter, Serenity, and s Kaurpa .n a bunch.

Proceedings were brought to a conclusion with the Himatangi Welter, for which Flingot was most fancied of the ton runners. The start was fairly even, Stratbmoir.v finding his feet very quickly* and ho led from Toanga down tho back and. into the straight. Flingot came with a wet sail up the home stretch, but Mr MeManaway'a gelding was not to he caught, winning very comfortably by .a length and a half. Splash was a length off third, followed by Marton and Toanga.
