FROZEN MEAT IN LONDON
MR LXSNAR’S ALLEGATIONS. DECISION OF HAWKE’S BAY PRODUCERS. PRESS ASSOCIATION! HASTINGS. December 22. About fifty station-owners, fanners and others interested in tho frozen meat trade mot hero this afternoon and were addressed by Messrs Lysar and L. H. Mcllardy, members of the Now Zealand Investigation Committee. Mr Lysnar emphasised tho fact that his allegations were almost wholly admitted by thoso responsible, but tho difficulty was to find and. adopt tho best method by which, to improve the ■state of affairs. Ho estimated that Now Zealand farmers were losing over Jil.(100,000 a year through faulty landing. Argentine exporters surmounted the difficulty by sending their produce to Liverpool, theuoo by train to Sraithfield. Ho had seen Dominion and Argentine meat side by side. The Now Zealand article was dirty, torn and broken, while that from tho Republic was clean and wholesome, lie expressed regret that Sir George Clißord and Mr Beauchamp endeavoured to cover up the charges instead of trying to improve matters. It was useless tor them to defend when those on the spot did not attempt to do so. Homo authorities agreed that there was plenty of room for improvement. Mr W. Nelson said lie was afraid Mr Lysnar had allowed his energy .to overrun his discretion.
Mr Ls'snar replied that lie had pointed out in his report that the Colonial Consignment and Delivery Company's handling was quite satisfactory. The ha’rfres used" by Sir Montefrue Nelson and Co. woro in ppood condition. On tho motion of Mr B. D. D. Mo. Loan it was resolved: That the rnoetinff desires to en-
dorse tho recommendations of too TSfow Zealand Committee that bettor facilities bo provided for handling and sorting New Zealand /produce at .tJio London docks, and if facilities on the lines suggested one provided by the' Port of London authorities individual members present at this mooting do all in their power to direct that their produce _ be discharged through these facilities. It was also resolved to endorse the report and recommendations of the Nog Zealand Committee:
(i) That increased storage should bo provided at Smithtield Market; (2) that trolleys on rails bo provided -for the carriage of meat within the market; (3) that the present allowances on New Zealand moat bo made uniform with those allowed at other ports on foreign meat. ' If those requests bo accede<l to by London City Corporation, this meeting considers that it a will-largely reduce the dissatisfaction among producers regarding the handling, storage and distribution of their produce in’London.
A committee consisting of Messrs MeHardy. It. D. D. McLean, T. B. Creese, N. Kettle, J. S. McLeod, and W. Richmond was sot up to further the recommendations of the Investigation Com--miitoc. '
