ITALY MOVING AUSTRIAN DEMAND FOR EQUALISING PROVISION. Interviewed at New York last week upon his return trom Austria, where ho had gone to attend an international congress, Professor David Starr Jordan, president of the Lclami Stanford University, who will be remembered by Australians, expressed the opinion that the building of warships was ruining European countries. Questioned aa to the possibility of war between England and Germany, the professor ridiculed the suggestion that such a conllict was likely. JAPAN’S NEXT PROGRAMME. APPROPRIATION SPREAD OVER SIX YEARS. TOIvIO, October 24. The next Budget will appropriate 70,000,000 yen (a little over £7,000,050 for the navy, the expenditure to be spread over six years. THE GERMAN PROGRAMME ADDITIONAL CRUISER ANNUALLY DEMANDED. (Received October 26. 0.45 a.m.) BERLIN, October 25. Admiral von Ivoester, addressing the Eisenach branch of the Navy League, endorsed the demand for the addition of a large cruiser annually to the building programme from 1912 onwards. He took up this altitude on the ■ ground that cruisers of the Bertha class were used as training ships and were mere floating gymnasia. Large substitutes ought to be found, for them without awaiting the expiry of twenty years. Admiral von Koester contended that the reserve formations ought to be strengthened under the Navy Law owing to the recent sale of warships to Turkey.
