WELLINGTON MARKETS

PETTIT AND PRODUCE.' ' , The demand for all limes of fruit, supplies of which are confined to only a wniaii number of various mrietiee, is parhioullafJy keen. Arrivals of Cook Island bananas and oranges ha.vb .been eagerly awaited, and what ferw came, fori wao-d via Auckland yesterday had a re- ' markiaibly keen demand. Xt is unlikely that any farther supplies will arrive for another month, consequently tlio small quantity which has just arrived will have to satisfy the heeds of the'markot over that period, which means that long before further shipments will be at hand, the market will be absolutely bare of stocks. Doubtless, however, tho advent of nenv season's lines as the summer advances will tend to relieve the tension, at the same time there is always a keen inquiry for tropical fruit at tills period of the year. The usual weekly supply of IS ew South Wales citrus and other , fruits is due to-day and a strong demand is anticipated for them. Stocks of Californian apples have been greatly reduced, and- arrivals of Tasmanian grown apples should face a good market. A fairly large percentage of the American apples which arrived via Sydney last week opened up in indifferent order.- , POTATOES AND ONIONS.

The market for potatoes continues to display a'strong tone, and stocks locally arc light. Tlie market cannot be further replenished to any extent until shipments • arrive from Australia at the end of the week. Advices from Victoria continue to inuiLca/te a rising market, owing to it general shortage in stocks. . As a matter of fact operations with Victoria this season have been on a most lavish scale, business generally having been confined to white -varieties, cf which very.few are now obtainable. Much larger quantities of new potatoes have oouue forward from the north, with the ; result that the market has declined considerable. Values, which were ruling in 1 the region of 6d per Jb early last week, are now ranging 2id to 31U> lb, according to quaility and condition. The Victorian market lor onions continues steady as the onions, however, are only opening -up here in fair condition, and not fit to keep any time, business on the «pot is of a hand to mouth nature. . Potatoes prime, .£lO to Xll ton, inferior sorts, £S 10s to d£9; onions, £S to A'B 10s. OTHER VEGETABLES. With the exception of, cabbages, which are now in very plentiful supply/ the market for nearly . all other lines is only sparsely supplied.
