TIMBER MILL BURNT

BIG EIEE AT PETONE.

The biggest blaze witnessed in Petone for several years occurred at half-past 3 yesterday morning, when the timbermills of Messrs Bailey, Austin, and Arcus were totally destroyed. The flames had a strong hold. when, the alarm was given and when the brigade arrived had completely mastered the mill itself. A light northerly was blowing, but there were no buildings to leeward, and lrom this side the- brigade commenced thenattack under ' Superintendent Lopper e direction. The flames soon spread, to a shed on tho north side containine a valuable stock of mouldings and dressed timber, and then the brigade saw the disadvantage of their position. They I moved two leads of hose through, and got in behind the fire, but too late to save the shed and its contents. A brick boiler-house behind the mill escaped destruction. The , office . escaped with a scorching. ■ Messrs Bailey, Austin, and Arcus had an insurance of JBSOO on their stock and jEaOO on the machinery and tools in the Ocean Accident Company. Their loss is estimated at about .£6oo' above this amount. The buildings, owned by Mr C. T. Price, and valued at about .£6OO, were uninsured.
