James, of Wellington, won the brilliancy prize at t:ho last New Zealand championship congress. Mr James is entitled to no small credit far his line play, after getting "out of- the books" (the opening moves being ■ from a consultation gamo won by world. champion Lusker). The game is admittedly worthy of the distinction, and is lively enough to satisfy oven those who think that modern games are dull.

Harry Freedman, of whom but little has been heard for some years, appears to be once more playing the game. A contemporary 'has the following: "MiHarry Freedman, twice champion of Scotland, gave a simultaneous exhibition of draughts-playing.in the Y.M.C.A., Johannesburg, on Boxing Night. There was a good turn out of draughts" players from different parts of tho Transvaal. Mr Freedman played sixteen opponents at once, and also contested one game at chess, winning 14 games at draughts, drawing 2, and the chess game fell to his lot. The two players who were fortunate enough to secure the draws were Messrs McCormiek and McCallum. Again, at tho game club on New Year's Day, Freedman gave another exhibition of his prowess, contesting 21 games. .Only two draws wero secured by the Africanders, the remainder being worn by Freedman. The plaver who secured both draws was. Mr AV/L. Taylor, Krugersdorp. Two games at chess were also played, the ex-cliampioD winning bath. As a result of the exhibition, and after some encouraging remarks from Mr Freedman, about a dozen players gave their names to Mr Di/bbie with the end in view of having a draughts club formed. Mr Freedman expected to bo in Johannesburg for another month at least, and eheekeTdom in that part will receive a warm awakening." . . Subjoined is the interesting game against Mr McCallum, who had the black pieces. "Second Double Corner." 1 11 12 .
