A KINGDOM OF BOSNIA

Great excitement prevails in Bosnia end/ Herzegovina,owing to a report that the Emperor Francis Joseph, who is now touring the provinces, is about to raise them to the status of a kingdom, thus re-establishing the kingdom, destroyed by the Turks in 1463. ' The Emperor was given a cordial recaption at Saraynvo, the capital of Bosnia. Bosnia and Herzegovina figured as . a Slavic Kingdom for a. brief period at the close of the fourteenth century, but wa3 permanently conquerad by the Turks in 1463. There- were bloody insurrections in 18»-5i and 1875-76. The Mohammedans offered a fierce resistance to Austrian occupation in 1878, under the Treaty of Berlin. Austria finally annexed the provinces at the end of 1908.
Formerly a part of Pannonia, Bosnia was governed by chiefs, until a brother-in-law of Louis. King of Hungary, was made King in 1376. He was defeated by the Turks in 1389, and became their .vassal.
