SOCIAL AND PERSONAL NOTES
Mr E. Wilson has returned to Bulls. Miss Huntor-Brown, Nelson, is in town. Dr and Mrs Harty have returned from their trip to Pkton. Mrs Brio Eiddiford is the guest of Mrs Mills in Hobson street. Captain Gathorne-Hardy has gone out of town for a few days. Mrs Lewis, who is staying with her son at Martinborough, will return to town to-day. Miss Mac Andrews’ sister, Mrs Hayes, is staying at the Royal Oak, in order to attend the Grand Opera. At the Miramar Club Miss Grey and Miss Garter tied, each with 76. At the Wellington Golf Club Miss N. Brandon won.
The Coronation medal is given by the L.G.H. and is played for once a year in all the clubs belonging to the union. The day is fixed for the last Friday in May.
Mr Warnoek, of Warnock and Adkin. who has recently opened up a business in Wanganui, lias nought the residence of the late Mr Barnicoat and intends to live there.
Amongst the audience at " Madam Butterfly ” on Saturday evening were Mr and Mrs Morrah, Dr and Airs Gilmer. Mr and Airs ivnox Gilmer, Airs and Miss Barron, Herr Eemner and Mrs Lemner (iSelsonJ. Miss Hunter-Brown (iN olson).
Dr and Mrs Chesson are on a few days’ visit to Wellington prior to going to tfle Cook Islands. Mrs Chesson is staying with her sister, Mrs Austin Henderson, of Seatomi. They will bo very much missed at Hanmer, where they both have been such favourites. Mrs Chefrson is a well-known Queenslander.
Skating Is rapidly coming to the front as a winter amusement and bids fair to seriously affect the dances this season. It is a pretty sight to see a. good rinker, with body well poised, skimming ligutiy over the smooth wooden floor at the skating rink. Tub graceful, easy motion of the accomplished skater is far preferable to the jolting which is so prevalent in the ballroom of to-day, though the preliminary antics of would-be shatters are anything but picturesque.
An enjoyable little dance was given in the Bouioott street hall on Saturday by a committee of ICelburne ladies. Supper was served upstairs, where tbe tables were artistically decorated, and dancing was continued till midnight. Amongst those present were Mrs Knowles, Mrs Clarke, Misses Clark (3), Miss Sturtevant. Miss Pascoe, Misses Inder (2),-Miss Gannaway, Messrs Bell, Osmond (2), Inder, Hobbs, and Knowles.
Mrs Maloomson, of tbe Hutt, gave an enjoyable afternoon tea on Saturday in honour of Miss Bodmin. Tea was served in the diningroom. Mi’s Maleomson wore a heliotrope ninon trimmed with- bands of silk in a darker shade. Miss Bodmin was in a brown striped cloth frock and a fur hat. Amongst those present were Mrs Hare, Mrs Jackson, Mrs' Hector, Mrs Bodmin, Miss E. Bodmin, Miss Elliott, Miss Hayward, Miss Sheriff, Misses Jones, Miss Cuff, Miss Wilson, and Miss Chappie.
The Highland Rifles ball this year promises to be most successful. The music and catering are tho same as were engaged for the Masonic ball 2 and tho decorations ax© to bo on an elaborate scale. All the stage in front of the organ will represent a military camp, with sentries in full dress patrolling tho lines. The space underneath the gallery will be converted into alcoves beautifully decorated and famished, ©ach on© to bear a name of the Seaforth Highlanders- ’ famous battles, such as Lubknow, Spion Hep, etc. Around 'the gallery and from tho oeilinrr will be festooned drapery of the com colours. The grand march, headed by four pipers, will make a most imposing spectable, finally ending in a waltz. Patron® will also appreciate an exhibition of TTijrhTA.nd fling and sword dances given by a trio who ar© all gold medallists. The gallery will be cleared at 10.30 p.m. to facilitate arrangements for supper. This ball has now become firmly established as the Scottish ball.
