MAIL MATTERS

(To the Editor “N.Z. Times.' 1 ) Sir, —For weeks past the Sydney steamers leaving here on Fridays have been advertised to sail at 5 p.m. and the average actual time of departure has been well past G p.m. The Post Office notifies that the ordinary closing time for the English mail is 2.30 p.m. It seems to mo an extraordinary thing that it should take two and a half hours to ‘.‘make up” this mail and deliver it to a steamer within 200 yards. Tho mail, I presume, is “made up’* from time to time, and surely it cannot take 150 minutes to make np tho final rush of mail matter. In nil countries there ia usually an additional amount of time allowed for posting at the head office, but not here! What is tho cause of this early dosing of an important mail?—l am, etc., ST,. GILES. Wellington, Hay 2Gth*
