OBSCENE LANGUAGE
HEAVY PINE AT MASTEETON. mon oca own cohuespondent. HASTE ETON, Anril 22. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr C. 0. Graham, S.M., Benjamin Norman Campbell, a youth, was charged with having used obscene language in-Queen street, Masterton, on the night e.f Saturday. March 26th. Sir C. A, Pownall appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty to having used only one of the words set out in the charge. Constable Anderson gave evidence as to hearing accused use the words contained in the charge. Accused denied 'having used the words set but in the charge, with the exception of one.. The magistrate said that the using of obscene language was a serious offence, so serious that the Legislature had made severe penalties in connection therewith. Bad language would have to be nut down, and he intended to deal firmly with the present case as an example. Accused would be fined .£5 and 7s costs. A fortnight was allowed accused in which to pay til9 fine, counsel for accused stating that Campbell only received 25s per week in wages, and was the sole support of his mother.
