OUTBREAKS OF FIRE

BIG BLAZE AT LOWER HUTT. About 3 a.m. yesterday there was a serious fire at Lower Hutt, resulting in the destruction of a joinery', plumber's and painter’s, shop, together with tho contents of a timber yard, the property of Strand Bros,, sawmillers. The brigade had a hard fight with the gale which was raging at the time, but a splendid supply of water "was available, and the houses .on both sides_ of the mill were saved*. Three vehicles and five sets of harness were lost, in addition to the stock and plant. There was a policy of £7OO over the workshop and machinery in the South British office, but the loss is several hundred pounds in excess of this sum. Slight damage was caused to Mr Strand's residence, while that of Mr Gosse on the other side was rather severely damaged to an estimated extent of .£2OO or .£3OO. Mr Gosse's house was insured for £4OO in tne Boyal office and the furniture tor £l5O in the New Zealand office.

At 3.50 a-m. yesterday the city brigade attended a firs at 69, Kent terrace, the building being a two-story dwelling of seven rooms, occupied by John Glau, and owned by Miss Eva Gooder. The outbreak originated on the first floor, the cause being unknown. The upper portion and the 'contents were badly damaged, while the ground floor suffered from water.' The building was insured for £375, in the United, and the contents for £IOO in the London and Lancashire office. A fire broke out in the some house on the 24th of this month, originating cm that occasion in a cupboard under the stairs. The kitchen and a portion of the passage were damagedby this outbreak. Sandford was totally destroyed by fire early thia mordmg, the ’ flames being fanned by a heavy southerly gale. Everything was burned, and the inmates had a narrow escape. Insurance: —Building, £2OO in the Sun office; furniture, £IOO in, the London add Lancashire. EIRE IN GISBOENE. PRESS ASSOCIATION, GISBOENE, March 30. A fire broke out in Gladstone road at 8.15 to-night. It, started at the hack of the drapery store of P. Hal lam, and spread to an empty building on one side and to a small laundry on the other side. Rain and an intervening brick wall prevented ' the fire from Spreading to a large two-storied wooden shop and the premises of Fred Hall. The drapery store and laundry were completely burnt out.
