The Lauderdale left Bulli (south of Svdnev) at 11 a.m. on Tuesday -with a load of coal for -Melbourne. The vessel afterwards loads timber at ltuon !or Melbourne, and returns to Huou to load timber lor New Zealand. The Government steamer llinemoa landed oil stores at the Godley Head lighthouse vestorday, and went, on to Lyttelton. This morning the vessel will land the keepers' provisions at the Godlev Head lighthouse, and will call at the Akaroa lighthouse this afternoon. The llinemoa will next work Moeraki, and afterwards calls at Dunedin. Mr G. Wilkinson rejoined the Blenheim as mate yesterday, and Mr W. Mcpherson, who has been acting-mate came ashore. Mr A. Coad signed on the Mokoia's articles vesterdav as second engineer, and Mr *M. C. 'Alexander joined as fourth engineer. The Scales Unci' Clan Boss, due at Wellington this morning from Bunbui'y, via ports, is to berth at the .King's Wharf. She has a considerable amount of timber yet to discharge, and will not commence loading till Monday. The vessel will get away about Wednesday for London and Dunkirk. The British four-masted barque Andromeda was berthed at the Railway -wharf yesterday morning, to discharge tho Wellington part of her cargo of case oils from "New York. It is reported that the New Zealand Shipping Company have chartered another steamer to load in New Zealand for London. The local office has not received any official intimation of the matter. The Blackball Coal Gomipany's collier Ng-ahere is due back at Wellington, tomorrow morning: from Greyrnouth, and is to sail again in the evening for Greymouth. The' auxiliary scow Echo arrived at GTeymouth yesterday from Patea, and is loading timber for Gisborne. Tire scow Maroro, 200 tons, has boon chartered to load a cargo of hardwood at Clarence River for Wellington. The Union Company's steamer Waipori is to load timber at Greymouth. next Monday for Melbourne and Sydney. The American and Australian steamer Spithead, bound from New York to Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports, arrived at Fremantle last Monday week. Messrs McAi'tlmr and Hull advise that the coastal steamer Storm, which is due here to-day from BluiY, is to sail to-mor-row for Lyttelton, Oamaru and Timaru. Th'o Ennerdale, with 150,000 ft of timber and 7000 sleepers for Dunedin, and 50,000 ft of timber for Oamaru, woe to have left -Greymouth last nighit for Westport to load 5000 sleepers for Dunedin. After discharging that cargo the Ennerdale will load at Oamaru and Timaru for Auckland. The Holmdale left Gisborne last evening with a load of. sheep for Lyttelton. From the latter port she" proceeds to Greymouth to take another cargo of timber to Gisborne. Tho Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Fifeshire, en route from Liverpool to Australian and New Zealand porta, left Durban on the 9th instant. THE NEW COLLIER NGAWAKA. Private advice has been received stating that Ngawaka is the name which has been selected for the Blackball Coal Company's new 1090 tons collier now boing built at Port Glasgow by Messrs A. Rodger and Co. The message also says that the vessel is to be completed in May, and will be out in New Zealand about the . end of July. Messrs lfadger aind Co. built and engined the Blackball Company's collier Ngahere, of winch the Ngawaka will be a duplicate. FROM LIMESTONE ISLAND. The Union Company advise that the Wanaka is to leave Auckland at 10 a.m. to-day for Limestone Island, Picton, and Wellington. The vessel will probably reach Wellington on Monday, and will proceed from bore to Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff OFFICERS' TRANSFERS. Mr J. E. Page, second officer of the Union. Company's steamer Moeraki, went south by the Maori last night to join the Rakanoa as chxef officer in place of Mr John Leonard, who has gone as assistant dredge master on the Westport •Harbour Board's dredge Rubi Seddon. Mi E. McKenzie, chief officer of the Waipoi'i, has resigned from tho Union Company's service . to accept the position of master of one of the Westport hoppers. Mr Surtees Rothery, i'ormeriy of the Waipori, arrived by the Moeraki yesterday after his holiday leave, in order to rejoin the Waipori as second officer. Mr T. V. Hill, is now chief officer of the Waipori in place of Mr McKenzie. I ' I - THE, ARAHURA. j , After being detained outside the Grey j bar the Union Company's steamer Ara-, nura entered that port at 12.30 o'clock yesterday morning and sailed on the return trip at 1 p.m. yesterday for Westport. The vessel is to sail from Nelson, at II o'clock this morning for Wellington direct, and is due hero about 7 o'clock this evening. CAPTAIN NORRIS DEAD. Australian papers report the death of Captain Norris. late master of the illfated barque Hippalos, at Sydney last week. Captain Norris was a well-known identity in the New Zealand-Australian -timber trade, and at one time had charge of the barquentine Jap. His last command, however, was the barque Hippalos, which touched a rock off Jackson j Head in November last, and sank while in tow of the Takapuna. After the loss of the Hippalos, the captain completely broke down, although he was exonerated from all blame by the Marine Court. Before he entered if> f o the New Zealand trade, he commanded vessels in the China Seas. Much sympathy was

expressed in Wellington after the loss of the Hippalos. XO FURTHER INQUIRY. The Marino Department lias decided tliat there is no need to hold any further inquiry, after considering the evidence adduced at the preliminary inquiries into tlie recent grounding of the Queen of the South on the Manawatu bar and the touching of a rock by the Mauazoa. The facts disclosed that' no!"'.ing could bo gained by any further investigation. TOMOANA FOE LONDON. The Tyser liner Tomoana is now expected to arrive at Wellington to-mor-row (instead of on Sunday) from Napier, to complete Homeward loading. The vessel will now probably get away on Sunday morning for London, via Las Palmas. THE JACQUES. The barque Jacques, Captain Louis Michel, which anchored in the stream at Auckland on Saturday night, berthed at the Queen-street whjirf on M,onjls>y morning. She left New York on November 16th, and after a somewhat long voyage of 115 days, arrived as stated. The vessel pasted several icebergs near the'Kerguelen Islands. The cargo consisted of 65,859 cases of oil, of which 32.350 cases will be discharged at Auckland, the remainder being for "Wellington. It is expected that the vessel will sail for 'Wellington "in about a fortnight. FROM LIVERPOOL. The Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Nairnshire, which is to sail from Liverpool on April 30th for Sydney and New Zealand ports, will bring cargo for discharge nt Napier in addition to Auckland, 'Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunediu. 'live , vessel should reach Napier at the end of June. TURAKINA LEFT CAPETOWN. \ Last Sunday the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer. Turaluna, en route, from London to Wellington, left Capetown. NIWARU AT MELBOURNE.' Laden with 10,000 tons of general cargo', of which about 3000 tons were to be landed in Melbourne, the Tyser liner Niwaru arrived at Melbourne : Ist Thursday morning from London via Las Palmas, having touched at the latter port to replenish bunkers. The whole voyage from London to Melbourne occupied only 41 days 17 hours, and-proved devoid of extraordinary incident. In the Bay of Biscav the 'Niwaru eno.rantered exceptionally rough weather, but emerged from it with flving colours and without a scratch. She berthed up the river immediately on arrival at Melbourne. NEW CANADIAN SERVICE. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Rakaia, now due at .London from Wellington, is to be the first vessel to enter the new service between Eastern Canadian ports and Australia and Mew Zealand. The Rakaia will leave Canada on May 14th for Melbourne, Sydney and four leading New Zealand ports. The Whakatano, sailing from Montreal on Juno 15th. will follow the Rakaia. There is passenger accommodation on botn boats. The line is to be known as the Eastern Canadian service of the New Zealand Shipping Company. , The Canadian Pacific Railway Company are the Canadian agents. MOERAKI FROM SYDNEY. , " A rainy passage, with heavy seas till Tuesday afternoon," described the experience of the Union Company's steamer Moeraki. which arrived at _ Wellington from Sydney direct at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. Pratique was granted and the" vessel berthed at No. . 1 north, Queen's wharf. The Moeraki left Sydney at 2 p.m. on Saturday and had strong south-easterly winds and seas and heavv rain almost all the way across the Taeman Sea.
