COURSING
Mr Jerry Jerome again draws the attention of coursing men to the fact that the first payment in connection with the Victoria Five Hundred (Sydney) is due on March Xsth. The stake is certainly worth going for, but it is doubtfid if we have a dog of sufficient merit to have much chance of winning it. At tre hig sale at tho Barbican, London, 109 greyhounds were submitted, but they only realised 806 guineas. Of those tho most notable was the smart puppy, Hydrastus, by Forest Tiger—Belmontlna, who has led every puppy she has met. She was bought iu for 148 gs, and Half Timo 11., belonging to Mr Tomlinson, of Carlisle, who divided the Longtown Oaks, realised but 48gs. The appearance of that smart puppy. The Merry Widow 11., by Glenlield —Daily Sport, put a little life into 'the proceedings. She is a beautiful bitch (says an English writer) and one of the fastest puppies we have seen out this season. She hhs only been beaten once, at the Mid-Annandalo meeting, after winning three courses, and being very hard run, and was afterwards one of the dividers of tho Bolder Union Oaks at Longtown. She evoked a very keen competition, and Eventually Mr Fettigrew, of Guilford, got her for 100 gs., the highest price of the sale.
