KARORI TRAMWAY EXTENSION
Although certain preliminary; work' has been carried out in connection with the extension of the Karori tramway section from the' cemetery, to the foot of Makara. Hill, it: will probably besome months before any decisive step is taken. The reason is that the Karori' Borough Council has applied .; for a ' loan 'of £27,500—-tho amount authorised by the ratepayers—under, the New-Zealand State Guaranteed Advances Act, but this .will .not come into force - for _ some time yet.' A reply has been'- received 1 from the Government stating that .the application ■will' be dealt with, but no' indication was contained in the communication as to whether, .the sum applied, for would bo granted. "If such an undertaking had been given," remarked Mi- C. I. "Dasent, Mayor of Karon to a ,", Times' 1 representative" yesterday, "wo oould:'go to the bank and_get an advance on the strength of the Gov-1 erninent's promise, and then call tenders'for material, etc., and go on with the" work. 1 As it is, 'we have spent a few"hundred pounds.out of the'gerieral fund on preliminaries, but that sort -of thing cannot continue. ,\\e have .-'opened up, a quarry by, the recreation reserve, whore somo splendid metal-r-blue flint—can- .bo obtained and a,tramway lias been' built connecting this with binns,- which are now being constructed, We have also pur'obased a Stoaeker steam' waggon for carting"the metal; so that you.see we have tilings-well in hand'for pushing oh with the work as soon as we can get the'- money."
