WELLINGTON CENTRE NEW YEAR TOURNEY. OPENING GAMES. , THE POSITION AT PRESENT. i Bowlers in Wellington have every rea- . son to be pleased with the manner in . which the New' Tear opened for them • and the circumstances attending the first day's play in tho centre’s annual tournament. The weather on the greens on • Saturday was just about all that could > bo desired, and play was correspond- ■ iugly enjoyable. The entries received were quite satlsi factory, sixty rinks taking part. Wei- , Jington Club headed tho list with 17 entries, Newtown being next with 11. '■ Other clubs were represented as follow; —Victoria 7, Thorndon 6, Kelburne 5, To Hiwi 1, Karori and Petone 3 each, i Hutt and Johnsonville 2 each. As was the case last year play went on simultaneously on all the city greens, the . players being divided into six sections. Two sections wore on the Wel--1 liugton greens, with one each on Thom--1 don, Kelburne, Newtown, and Victoria i greens. Two rounds were played in the . morning, and in tho afternoon, when a general change of scene was made, two more were settled. The umpires were Messrs Ilueston, Prince, Horry, Ballinger, Knowles, and Churchward, the latter being the secretary and having all his arrangements well in hand. . LEADING SKIPS.
