AVELLINGTON HANDICAP TOURNAMENT. SATURDAYS RESULTS. The first day's play of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association's New Year tournament took place on the asphalt courts at Brougham Hill, AYellington and Newtown, which were very kindlj' placed at the disposal of the management when it was found no piny could lake place at Day's Bay on Saturday. Both grades in the men’s singles were run off at Brougham Hill, excepting about eight of the second-class matches, which were decide dat Newtown. The men’s doubles were also advanced as far as possible at Brougham Hill. All the'events in which the ladies were participants had to ,bo fought out at Wellington courts (Palmer street), and this necessitated some of the men being somewhat inconvenienced, as after advancing as far as possible at Brougham Hill they had to make the journey to palmer street to play the combined double and ret\irn again. The players concerned,.however, submitted with good grace, and they along .with the others readily assisted in every direction (especially by umpiring) to mako the tournament sucoghslul under adverse conditions. Luckily* the weather was perfect and this was the chief factor in enabling the committee to dispose of La games (nine by default)/out of a totou number of 168, leaving, 4/ to be run off to-day - to conclude the meeting, _ The pomtion. of the events practi.cal.lj completed is as under:- c • Men's Singles.—First Grade: Semifinalists —I’.
