Tho return of tho New Zealand Shipping Company’s chartered steamer Anglo liaxon on Saturday morning с. ea ted a mild sensation along the water-front. The ves : ei had sorted at, 5.15 p.m. on Friday af .eru on for Lon- : vtau, v;a Monte Valeo, and it was a very considerable surprise to chose who saw her steaming up to an ani-horage shortly' before 8 a.m. The flags being at hailmost, gave evidence of a death on board. As tho steamer had not touched at any foreign port after clearing, from Wellington, it was ' not necessary for the port health officer to visit the vessel. Messrs Egar and Bacon, of the wharf Customs staff boarded tile Anglo Saxon and replaced the seals on her lockers. Subsequently, when, the bad news of tho fatal accident to the chief engineer! The work’ of repairing the damaged pipes in the engine-room Iras been placed in the hands of Messrs Jenkins and Mack. Tho shattered evaporator will not be replaced , at Wellington, the vessel being able to draw her fresh Water supplies from another source. It is

hoped that repairs will be completed in time to penult the vessel to sail again to-morrow evening. Captain Isaacs had anticipated arriving at London on February 17th, but the vessel will now bo four or five days later in reaching her destination. She will, however, be at London in ample time for the March wool sales. DORIDE, FROM MARSEILLES. TWO BOATS LOST. ROUGH WEATHER ON THE COAST. After a passage of 132 days from Marseilles, the Italian barque Deride (with a cargo of roofing tiles for Wellington and Auckland) signalled for a pilot oil the Wellington heads at 4.30 o’clock yesterday morning. The steamer Duchess took Pilot Hayward out. and placed him ou board the Doride about seven nines out from the entrance. The master decided to dispense with tho services of a tug, and as there was a light fair wind the barque made fair . .progress ait first. Subsequently the wind went round to the north-west, and with .considerable skill Filot Hayward beat the barque under full sail slowly up to the stream, where - anchor was dropped at 3.45 p.m. yesterday. Dr Kemp, ActingPort Health Officer, went , out to the stream shortly after the vessel’s arrival and granted pratique. • „ ■ Tho Doride was hoarded by a . 'Times ropreseutative, who was supplied with the following report by Captain 1-ran-cesco Cacaco“The Doride left Marseilles ou August 22nd, cleared Gibraltar fifteen days later, and experienced good north-easterly trade winds to the Capo Verde Islands. During' tho next five succeeding days fresh, south-westerly ‘winds prevailed. Fair south-easterly trades were next met .with. .The Doride ran down the easting along 43 , degrees south latitude. Strong westerly winds continued across the Southern Ocean. No ice or wreckage was seen. The Doride made the Snares on December 17th, then northerly winds baffled the vessel up tho south coast of Otago. A south-wester-ly took the barque up to Cape Campbell, when, on Saturday, December 25fch, tho heavy southerly gale ran the barque right up to Cape Kidnappers. Heavy seas crashed on to the decks, and ! all hands had ■ a very 'exciting time. :Two‘ of the ship’s- lifeboats wore swept right away. The wind suddenly veered to' the north, and the Doride was blown round into (t’ook Strait.” During tfie past weed:; Captain Cacaoe had a most anxious experience, and was completely worn out for want of sleep when the barque arrived at Wellington. The vessel will berth to-day to discharge 300,000 tiles' at Wellington, and will afterwards pro-; ceod with, the; remainder, 200,000,' to 1 discharge at Auckland. The Dorido is a steel barque of . 1303 tons gross , and: 1125 not. built in IS9I in Franco. . She is owned by Flli Pollio, of Castelamare, Italy, and. the vessel, was formerly named Joanne d’Arc. Messrs Briscoe: and Co. are the local agents. < The Dorido is reported to be fixed to load timber, at Mercury Bay for the United Kingdom.. •MOERAKILEFT SYDNEY. The vessel should arrive here about midday to-morrow.
