A SOUNDS EXCURSION.
BT MOVING PICTDKES. Mr W. Frauklyn Barrett, who is taking: moving pictures in New Zealand for tho noted Parisian firm of Pathe Brothers, .writes:— • Have 'just returned - from - the Sounds trip. We had glorious weather in Milford Sound; and I fairly revelled in ful scenery. I exposed over 2000 feet of film in .and about Milford Sound. . Tho track between Sandfly Point and Lake Ada was enough to tempt me to use all the film I had. Therj -were glorious fern gullies, waterfalls, rapids and foliage, ;with glimpses of snow-clad hills here and there. Tho , only drawback was l the ‘myriads of sandflies which attacked' bne, in spite of tbs "sandfly-lotion,”’etc. - The lotion-seemed to attract rather than'repel the host. In the -nSound the colossal Mitre .Peak and Pembroke seemed dwarfed by the immensity of their surroundings, and it. war tho sain© immensity that makes me afraid that my work well' not do justice to this huge work of nature. There is nothing.in tha foreground to give a spectator a criterion of the great heights. • Bowen Falls, over 550 feet, seem a mere trickle till one gets, a' closer view. This* fail ‘ I “treated pretty thoroughly, doing the-climb of 6000 feet over tho spur to get a view of the top portion of the fall. I am afraid I cannot draw a pen-picture of th*o Sounds, and Milford would, require an. artist, ir this department to give.even a small idea of it. Great praise Is due to Captain McDonald and his courteous officers for the excellent way in which they handled the passengers. ► .The» greatest grumbler could not find a fault.* Launches and boats were run in all directions at-fre-quent intervals, so, that- had. a chance to go everywhere. Mr Doorly,-the chief officer, was master of ceremonies, and the success of tho dances and concerts on board was duo to his . efforts. Chief Steward Carmichael catered for the picnic parties, arid there was nothing, missing. Bight down to tho sailors of the ship.
everyone worked hard to make a pleasant trip, and they ■ succeeded admirably. To* morrow I go to Christchurch,; and after a few days will start for tire West Coast, via Qtira and Buller Gorges,
