Ho also secured the. challenge cup, which was competed for by boats belonging .to thn Petone and To Aro Clubs'. SAILING EVENTS: Tho sailing events resulted as follow: — 16 Foot Half Deckers and under,, once round course. Nan - (.scr;/ 1; Uilblas (:Jimiu), 2; Alcana (Itbninb o. \Vaiwetu also started. The finishing times .were —Warcliou, 12hr 30min 3Usec; Nikau, 12hr 50 min; Bronze wing, 12hr 54mm; Clara, 12hr 56min oOsec; Madge, 1 p.m. Inter-Club Challenge Cup Race, once over course.—There were no handicaps in this race, all the boats starting off scratch. Nan was the quickest away, being followed closely by Rambler. Ail the others started in a bunch/ Nan showed the Avay on the rim to the buoy, and rounded it about tAvo hundred yards in front of Rambler. Nan did not gain much on the beat,to the windward buoy, the two boats rounding with about a minute separating' them. The lead back to the wharf .saw. no .difference between 1 the two boats. The other boats, which, had spread out after rounding the Somes Island buoy, all finished with the excep- . tion of Winfred (which lowered a\yay and returned, to town) and Rival, which had opened up in her side, thus letting the water in. Tho result, with the finishing times given in parentheses, Avas: Nan (21it 41m:u), 1; Rambler (2hr 42min losec), 2; Runa- (2 hr 43min SOsec), 3. Also started—Redwing (2hr 46min), Hahau (2hr 49min 30scc), Gilblas (2hr 51 him): In the 18 foot and under half-dockers' race Mad go (23min) was the only starter. During the day a programme' of run-, ning events for young and old ;were hold on the beach, and were Avell contested. MARLBOROUGH REGATTA. The splendid weather on ’New"Year's. Day induced many people to take advantage of the Union Company's escur--*ion to Picton, where the Marlborough regatta was held. The excursion steamer Mararoa arrived at Picton ; in ample time for the visitors to witness the first race. None of the races were parbicu-. larly exciting, as the first half of the course .was rough -enough ■- to - nearly i, sAvamp most of the boats. The racing, resulted as follows — MAIDEN FOURS, One mile'; first prize .£6, second £3. Picton Rowing Club—N. Godfrey (stroke), F. Bush (3), H. Whiting (2), C. Petrie (bow) : 1 Star Boating • Club—P. Pye-Smith (stroke), S. S. Butt. (3), P. R. Stantell (2), J. Dudley (bow) ... ... 2 Also started—Blenheim and . Wellington. Blenheim got their, boat moving first, and looked well for a short distance until the Star crew 1 came up aid passed them. They had established a lead of a length when Stansell s seat left, the. rails and he was compelled to sit on the runners. Picton Avon by live lengths. •, SENIOR FOURS, Two miles. First prize .£l2, second d£2. Picton Rowing Club—A. Perano (stroke), F. Garrick (3), C, Puirano (2), D. Perano (boAv) ... X This race was-a, fiasco-from start to finish. Blenheim swamped before they reached the start, and Stars, although Avell, had to leave their sinking boat about two hundred yards from the 1 start, while Picton paddled home. Tho first croAV to become ’ conspicuous Avas Pioton No. 1, and, although Stars cam© into prominence, the former made several plucky efforts, losing only by three-quarters of a length. Going.well after the start, they looked like winning, when the stroke seat carried away, and this misfortune gave Picton an. advantage. The senior and junior pair-oared races took place after the departure of the Mararoa. LYTTELTON REGATTA. PEESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, January 1. The Lyttelton regatta was held to-day in perfect weather. In addition to the regatta there were swimming, aquatic, and athletic sports, also a .submarine explosion, which was a great. success. In the evening there was a display of fireworks. The yacht race handicap was won by lorangi (D. AVall), scr, by Imin 45sec on time.
