VISITING VOLUNTEERS
WANGANUI HIGHLAND RIFLES.
Twenty-six members of the Wanganui Highland Rifles arrived in Wellington last Friday night, the occasion being the annual rifle match between the Wanganui and Wellington Highland Rifles. The match took place at Trentham in conjunction with the Garrison Rifle Association’s meeting. When firing ceased, two of the Wellingtork men had not completed their shc'S)i and they have to compile 39 per i'is between them at 600 yards to win the match.
On Saturday night the visitors wEre entertained at a smoke concert given by the local corps in the Garrison Hall. Lieutenant G. Willis presided, in the absence from town of Captain MoDiarmid. A very enjoyable even, ing was ■ spent. Vocal items were contributed by Lieutenant Wilkinson, Sergeant McArdle, Corporals St. Clair and Shannon, of Wellington, and Sergeants Armstrong. McGonagle, Privates Taylor and Tyler, of Wanganui. The officers present were Lieutenants Watson (Wanganui) and Wilkinson (unattached). Yesterday the visitors were driven out to Taita, where a picnic was held. Sports events were got off, and a cricket match resulted in a win for Wellington by three wickets. The majority of the visitors are returning by this morning’s train, the remainder waiting for the second day’s shooting of the Garrison Rifle Association's meeting.
