RIFLE-SHOOTING

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. 810 MUSTER OP MARKSMEN. F. WILKIE LEADING. The -weather was glorious at Trentbom on Saturday for the mitml stages of the second annual rifle Meeting held by the Wellington Garrison Association. All day long 'the sun shono brightly, and after the first .range ivas completed, not even a cloud scudded across tho sky to iu«r'fere with tho light. The wind, ho over, was at times very tricky. _ it was of the order known, in shooting parlance as ‘-patchy,” and at differed Buagas of the M y “moggies would be scor'd right along toe fining lino, when “bulls” were being notched immediate!, be.orc. For the greater part of the daj ctue wind ira, from cue left, averaging fioni “a-ad in'" to about six or Beien degrees al, the longer ranges; but a puh would comu from the right at unexpected moments, and upset the chances of men who look 'd like making big scores. It is ever thus at Trenthdm, which has the reputaltton of being one of the most ficklo ranges in tho southern hemisphere. Tho meeting, which will be continued to-day, is tho largest and most representative district gathering yet held at Tr.mth-m. There are lot competitors taking part, 53 of these representing rifle clubs, the remainder being volunteers. X* ,st year there were 157 entries. In fthe senior class there ‘are 80 competitors, and 101 in the junior. The meeting is

growing in popularity, and the association deserves great credit for providing a first-class programme when funds were Vry scarce. Now that this annual gathering is firmly established, and is attracting r ,rge local entries, as well as marksman from the country districts, (the citizens of Wellington should put .their hands in their pocKets, and belli to provide a bettor prize list, The pro tnary object of the officers controlling the meeting has been right (through to nake ’the entrance fee small—to come Iwithin the roach of all- Tho consc,q lienee is that the prize money is also 's vail, and as the aasociiition is doire all in its power to encourage nth .shooting, it is for the citizens, who |r ally benefit in the matter of protec--t.on, to do something to augment the If nds of the association. Tho shooting took, place on the Colitis range, where twenty-five targetrwere utilised, the men competing on the“Vue man one target” system; Captain Bison was in charge at the firing point. 1 ■ was assisted by Lieutenants Roacha d Hulb-rt, and Scxff Sergeant-Major C dclough -red Redn-pnd, both of Nelson Tho target trench was supervised by Cap ■ iii; I •.theion a..«l L ent.-n int Wilkin Ti n.
