RAILWAY SERVANTS

A largely-attended meeting of the Paekakariki branch of the Napier-Taranaki-Manawatu Railway Sick Benefit Society was hold on Sunday afternoon to consider the proposals of the Amalgamated, Society of Railway Servants to take over the control, of the various sick benefit societies. Mr J. Cain presided. Mr A. Cassio (Wellington representative of the society) addressed the meeting, and explained that the society had been over twenty-sis years in existence, and had done good work. The management expenses were not more, than half of a friendly society; the contributions were on the lowest scale. He reviewed the societies 1 baland explained to members what benefits they were able,to receive under the present system, and from figures quoted showed that the society was in a strong , financial position. Since the Wellington meeting the part that kindred societies were taking had come to hand, and members would be pleased to hear that other societies were taking up the same stand as this committee on the subject.

Mr Oassie commented on the editorial remarks in the recent issue ' of the “Railway Review. 11 He strongly objected to the statements pub forward there, and he challenged the “Review 11 to name any society which was not worked on a sound basis. In 1 opinion, the officers of the A.S.R.S. wished to strengthen their hands' against the members of the newlyformed Locomotive Men’s Association, who threatened to pull out of the A.S.R.S., and by getting control of the benefit societies the members would be compelled to remain in the A.S.R.S. Mr H. Farnsworth (Paekakariki representative) moved the following resolution, which was seconded by Mr Davidson, and carried: “That this meeting'of members of the Napier-Taranaki-Manawatu Railway Sick Benefit Society does not consider it advisable that the control of the present sick benefit societies be handed over to the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and has every confidence in the management of this society. 11
