Goudy, who is retiring on * pension from the management of the Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay division of the' business of DaJgety and Co., Ltd., after over twenty years, service, was on Saturday presented - by the company’s Napier, Gisborne, Dannevirke and Wairoa staffs with an album of photographs and other tokens of esteem.

Mr James Galt, of Mavis Bank, Tuturau. Southland, has arrived in Wellington on route to Palmerston. North, where he will judge the section for Ayrshire cattle at the Manawatu A. and P. Association's show. Mr John Jack; ian esteemed'local,business man, died on 1 Friday *at the ag© of eighty-one years. H© was bom at Perry Porteon-Craig, Pifeshire, Scotland, and began business life as an apprentice in the office of Mr E. Baxter (hemp and flax merchant), Dundee. Later he himself established a business in. that town. A keen volunteer, ho became captain commanding No, 1 Company Forfarshirfe. Rifle Volunteers. With other officers of the regiment he was presented to Queen Victoria in London during the year 1860. He married in 1854 Ellen Matthews Whitson, third daughter .of Mr Adam Whitson, of Bum Head, Perth. Ho subsequently -entered business in Edinburgh, was an. of the Churchy of Scotland, and was interested in musical matters. Coming to New Zealand by the Invercargill in 1884; Mr Jack became a merchant of this city, and until a few years ago actively conducted business. Ho was elected by the ratepayers to, the Harbour Board, and was for two years chairman of that body. He was a Justice of the Peace, and during the whole of his life in Wellington an elder of St. Andrew's Church. He was, a member of. the choir, and one of the Presbyterian .C.hurch property trustees. Ho was also a keen member of the Caledonian Society. The deceased gentleman, who had been living in retirement for six years, leaves a widow and two sons—Messrs James W. and J. 11. H. Jack, of this city.
