ROBBERY AND ASSAULT
EXTRAORDINARY AFFAIR. WOMAN ILL-TREATED BY PSEUDO CABMAN. PBEBB ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, October 30. An extraordinary case of robbery with violence occurred last night. A lady who came from Fiji to undergo a serious operation was placed in a cab in Queen street by a doctor, who instructed a man who jumped on the box and assumed the driver’s'seat to drive the lady to a private hospital. The driver, instead of taking the lady there, took her in the direction of Onehunga. The lady protested to,the man that she was carried beyond . her destination, whereupon, she alleges, he left his seat, struck her, and stole her gold rings, jewellery, and a considerable, sum of money. The doctor subsequently proceeded to the private hospital to see the patient. Finding that she was not there, ho communicated with the police, and six constables were detailed to search for the lady. They found her at Onehunga, and at once sent her to the private hospital. She was suffering from shook., The cab was found in Queen street again, but the driver had disappeared. The cabman, it is stated, was having his tea. when a man who is known to the police assumed the role of driver. So far he "has dot been arrested.
