CHURCH AND POLITICS

WHITE AUSTRALIA DEVELOPING THE TROPICAL TERRITORY. A -HERETIC" DIVINES OPINION. By Telegraph—press Association— Copyright. PERTH, October 29. The Anglican Congress discussed the Whito Australia question. Divergent views were expressed as to the probable result of an Asiatic overflow into Australia. [ Archdeacon Whitington, of Hobart, I said that if a White Australia was intended to carefully guard racial purity, he was altogether in favour of it. Ho was afraid his Labour friends meant a good deal more, and that the object aimed at was tho ontire exclusion of coloured races. He suggested that consideration might be given to tho suggestion to develop tropical Australia by moans of indentured labour. Canon Stephen said it was not on account of differenco of civilisation, but difference of religion and for the sake of religion, that the White Australia policy was the right one. The Archbishop of Brisbane, Dr Donaldson, said ho considered that tho White Australia principle was unchristian. Tlio only alternative to having coloured races was an empty Northern Territory, and tho attraction of an empty north would bo greater than if wo attempted to fill it. Tho only solution of tho trouble was indentured labour. Ho was heretic enough to believe that the salvation of the north was to be found in kanaka labour.
