Galbraith, of the New Zealand Shipping Company's local office, who has been laid up for about a fortnight with an attack of ’ influenza aud bronchitis, has now recovered, and will resume duty to-day. ' Tho Maoriland Company's steamer Holmdale, bound from Gisborno to Picton and Greymouth, passed the Wellington Heads on Saturday about 4.30 p.m. The Defender left Hokitika on Friday morning with a load of timber for Lyttelton, and is due there this morning. The vessel is to leave there tomorrow for AVellington, Greymouth, aud Hokitika. On Thursday last the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Tokomaru sailed from London for Dunedin, Lyttelton, aud Nelson. She is due at Dunedin about October 20th. The Tokomaru will have tho distinction of being the first direct steamer to visit Nelson with cargo from London, although two vessels, the Rakala and Aotea, have previously called there to load cargo. The Tyser liner ludralema, from London, left Sydney on Friday for Auckland. Napier, and AVellington. She is due here about the 22nd instant, and will discharge about 700 tons of cargo at this port. The Westport Coal Company’s collier Canopus is to get away from. AVellington at noon to-day for AA f estport. Mr A. Andrews, late purser of the Mapourika, transfers to the Manapouri for her new running in the Fiji-Molbourne trade. Captain D. McLean, of the cargo steamer Wnitemata, arrived at AVellington yesterday by the Monowai from Dunedin, on a month's leave; of absence. Captain J. F. Crawford, of the Kaitangata, is acting-master of the Waitemata. Captain Todd, of the Wanaka, and his chief officer, Mr Davey, have transferred to the Kaitangata. Mr Baldwin, mate of the Kaitangata, went ashore for orders.

The returns for the port of Westport for the month of August indicate a total output from the mine* of 62,521 tons, of which 60,376 tons were shipped away. The Wanaka, which is undergoing an overhaul at Port Chalmers, went under tho shoorlegs on Friday to have her old funnel taken out and a new one substituted. In continuation of heV voyage from London and Plymouth to Wellington, tho Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer-Tainui left Capetown on Friday afternoon, one day ahead of schedule time. LIGHTERAGE ABOLISHED. Shippers will. be pleased ,to note that the wharf extensions at the Glasgow Wharf at Napier have now been completed, and tho largest regular steamers will in future berth there as. previously. This will mean a saving in lighterage of 5s per ton, which was charged, while wharf extension works have been in progress. DELPHIC, FROM LIVERPOOL. The Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Dolphio arrived at Wellington on Saturday afternoon from Liverpool, via Adelaide and Auckland. Tho.vessel berthed at No. 16, Jervois quay, and after putting out part cargo will leave hero about Wednesday for Lyttelton and Dunedin with the remainder.. PAPAROA LOADS ON SATURDAY. On Sunday morning tho vessel will get away for Napier a.*d Auckland, to complete her loading for London. DARTFORD ARRIVES. THE UNION COMPANY'S TRAINING SHIP.

After an absence from New Zealand of about eight months the Union Company s training ship Dartford arrived at Wellington Into on Saturday night, timberladen from Bunbury, Western Australia. Pratique was granted and the vessel berthed yesterday afternoon at the Wool Jetty. Captain A. Cooper •reported' that the twelve apprentices are all well, ana have made a very good start -in their seafaring career. ; ' . T The Dartford left Kaipara last January on her first voyage from New Zealand. She was loaded with timber for Melbourne, which port she reached after a splendid passage of fifteen days. The Dartford subsequently loaded gram at Melbourne for East London. A rough and protracted voyage of 73 days was experienced. After diycharge the ship was "stiffened" with stone' ballast,' and a smart run brought her to Bunbury in 21* days. A cargo of jarrnh was loaded, and the Dartford sailed on August 18th for Wellington. She rounded Oape Leuwin on August 20th, and after experiencing moderate easterly weather passed south of Tasmania on August 31st (13 days out). On September 4tk the Kaiapoi was spoken, and the collier reported that no news had been received of the Waratah. Farewell Spit was. passed on Thursday night, and the tug Terawhiti took the ship in tow at. 4-30 p.m. on Saturday. The sailer dropped anchor in the stream at 9.45 p.m. The tugs Terawhiti and Natone berthed the. ship in a fresh southerly breeze yesterday afternoon. The vessel's cargo is consigned to Millars' West Australian Haid woods Company, Half of the shipment will be put out at Wellington, and the remainder will be unloaded at Lyttelton. Captain A. Cooper has with him the following officers:—Chief, Mr A. J. Barr; second. Mr W. Cossentine; third, Mr J. S. G, Reid (formerly of the Marama). The apprentices have been instructed in practical seamanship, and have taken their share of the work with the eight A.B/e and three ordinary seamen, who form the regulation crew. While at Bast London an able seaman named Archibald Bowie succumbed to diabetes. The deceased took ill' after leaving Melbourne, and was confined to his bunk during the greater part of the pa.ssage. Ho was removed to the East London Hospital, where he died about five days later. The ship's company attended the funeral and subscribed the necessary amount to purchase a tombstone. Deceased belonged to Isla, in Scotland. Two of the A.B.'s took ill on the run from Bunbury, and were still laid up yesterday.

MISHAP TO THE MONOWAL HYDRAULIC MACHINERY DISABLED.^ The Union Company's steamer Monowai, cm arrival nt Lyttelton on. Saturday morning from Dunedin, was unable to ■vrork her hydraulic cranes owing to a complete breakdown of her hydraulic machinery. So totally disabled was her cargo handling equipment that a-small amount of cargo that had to be put out at Lvttelton was worked by hand gear. The Vessel was ordered on to Wellington, and to-day is to discharge 410 tons of cargo for "Wellington. Napfer. Gisborne, and Auckland. The vessel will return to Port Chalmers this evening for repairs. Hex northward running will be taken up by the Waikare. The latter vessel left Dunedin yesterday for Lyttelton and Wellington. At Lyttelton she will pick up 700 ton* of cargo, which the Monowai was unable to lift. The. Waikare is due here to-morrow morning, and will sail at 2 p.m. to-morrow for Auckland, via ports. UMTA FROM CALCUTTA. The British India S.N. Company's steamer Umta,. which comes to the agency of the Union Compajiy, arrived at Wellington on Saturday night from Calcutta, via Auckland. The vessel berthed at No. 1, north. Queen's WYiarf, yesterday morning to discharge the remainder of her cargo, amounting to about 208 G tons, comprising bales of gunnies, also a little tea and condiments. The vessel left Calcutta for Auckland direct, and bad fine weather till within about four days before reaching the northern port, when a westerly gale set

in. After discharging 3225 to ins of cargo at Auckland, the Uinta Hailed at 2 p.m. last Thursday for Wellington. -About 11£ knots were averaged as far as Kuet Cape, when a heavy southerly swell decreased the speed *to about Si knot* l .
