REDUCED CABLE CHARGES
A NINEPENNY RATE PROBABLE AT EARLY DATE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received July 2, 10.20 p.m.) LONDON, July 2. It is stated that the offer of reduced rates on the Pacific cable arose out of Sir Joseph Ward's proposal to reduce terminal charges on press messages to id per word, conditionally on the Pacific reducing ite share to 2d. The Pacific makes a 1 counter offer of 2Jd, subject to the New Zealand Government reducing the terminal charge to id, making a rato of 9d per word, which will operate after twenty-one ■ days' notice to the Berne Conference. It is expected the new rates will be initiated on August Ist.

(Received July 3, 0.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July-2. i In the House of Representatives today Sir John Quick, Postmaster, officially announced that the Government lhad been informed of the Pacific's in r tention to reduce charges on press messages to and from Britain. The Government had been asked to co-operate by reducing the terminal rate, which would probably be reduced to id per word.
