Mr T. Sinclair, late chief engineer of the Tutanekai, has entered into partnership with Messrs Hutchison and Campbell, of the Victoria Foundry, AVellington. The contract to build the new deckhouse over the engineroom of the trawler Countess by Messrs Hutchison and

Campbell lias been completed. The trawling gear, ventilators, bunkers, etc., are now being fixed up, and it is hoped to have the vessel ready for sea soon, Mr Findlay, late assistant purser of the Waikato, has transferred to the Koonya as purser.

Bower, of the New Zealand Shipjiing Company’s steamer Turakina, reported to Captain Marciel, shipping master at Lyttelton, that at about 10.31) o’clock on Friday nigEt the steamer passed a" large and partly submerged object, with the sea breaking over and around it. The object was about 25 miles off the eastern end of Kaikoura Peninsula, which was bearing south 56 deg. W., correct magnetic. Masters of vessels bound in that direction are warned of the object, which constitutes danger to navigation. A similar object was passed by the barquentine Mary Isabel on the 10th inst., a. few miles to tho southward of Knikoura Peninsula, and about ten miles off shore. It is suggested that tho Marino Department shohld send out a steamer to search for tho submerged object, which may he the missing Rio Logo, ■ THEI CLAN! MACLAREN. . Mr G. H. Scales’s chartered steamer Clan. Maclaren is to ship about a thousand bales of wool at Napier, and is to proceed from that port to Wellington, where she is due on Wednesday. The vesaet is to sail on Saturday for London via the Cape Horn route. THE HOLMDALFi. Tho Holmdale left Lyttelton for Wanganui, where she will load trucks for Picton. She will afterwards convey sheep from Picton to Lyttelton, where the vessel will load produce for 'Greymonth. At the latter port the Hoimdale will load timber for’ Lyttelton. MOERAKI LEFT SYDNEY. The local office of the union Company has been advised that the Moeraki left Sydney at 3 p.m. on Saturday for Wellington direct. She, is bringing 41 saloon and 66 steerage passengers for Wellington, and is due here early on Wednesday morning. UTAMARO A IN TROUBLE. Word has been received that the Hud-dart-Parker steamer Uiimaroa, whilst proceeding up to Dunedin on Saturday morning struck the bottom abreast of Quarantine Island, near_ Port Chalmers, and sprung a leak. As the Uiimaroa has to dock for repairs arrangements have been made for both passengers ami cargo to be transhipped to the Talune for Bluff,

Hobart, and Melbourne. The Tulunc, which bus been laid up at Port Cnnlmers, is being put into commission without delay, ami will leave there southward bound tius evening. A diver discovered that the Hllmaroa was leaking in No. 4 tank'on the starboard strakc. The leakage has been temporarily repaired. The Otago dock is not largo enough to accommodate the vessel, so the tho Ulimaroa will go into dock at Lyttelton to-morrow morning. ATHENIC’S SMART STEAMING. The Shaw. Savill and Ajhion steamer Atheuic, which arrived at Wellington da Saturday from Loudon, made the voyage from Plymouth, to Wellington in 39 days 20 hours 23 minutes actual steaming time, which is a. record for that vessel. ■The voyage just completed, is that vcewel'fi seventeenth from Home. The average, hourly steaming was 13.499 kudts. From Hobart to Wellington tho Atheuic averaged 14,05 knots. The vessel steamed from Plymouth to Teneriffo in 4 days 12 hours 39 minutes; from Teneriffo to Capetown in 14 days 5 hours 31 minutes; from Capetown to Hobart in 17 days 7 hours 50 minutes; from Hobart to Wellington in 3 days 18 hours 23 minutes. The best day's steaming was on February 6th, when 356 miles were covered. TONGARIBO, FROM HOME. A PLEASANT VOYAGE. Despite a serious collision in tho English Channel a few weeks ago the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tougariro arrived at Wellington yesterday morning (a day ahead of schedule time) as good as on tho day she was launched.'. The repair work was expeditiously and capably performed. The vessel was granted pratique and bertned at No. 6, Queen’s Wharf at 10.35 a.m. The Tougariro left London on January Sth and Plymouth two days later. Moderate weather prevailed in the Hay of Biscay, and Teneriffo was reached on January 12th. The vessel arrived at, Capetown on January 27th. Thirty-third-class passengers joined the vcvscl, and the, Tougariro . sailed again on the 28th. The weather being moderate, a pood speed 1 was maintained across : to Hobart, which was reached on February 15th. After landing passengers and discharging 450 tons ot cargo the vessel sailed on Wednesday for Wellington. The Tonganio has 33; u tons of cargo to discharge at Wellington, and :s expected to leave hero on Thursday with balance of cargo for Lyttelton; THE MAR-BEE. 1 Outward hound from Londori via Australian ports, Auckland and Napier, the I Tyß&r steamer Marero is due at \Vclliilgton next Sunday. After completing discharge at Wellington the vessel will move over to the Glasgow wharf for Homeward loading. ; ATHEXIC, FROM LONDON. A PINK PASSAGE. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer 'Atheuic, from London, via’Capetown and Hobart, exceeded all expectations ,by arriving in the stream at Wellington at 5 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Pratique was : granted and tho vessel berthed at No. 1, north. Queen’s Wharf, at 8.45 p.m. on Saturday. The vessel'left Plymouth era, January Sth and had a fine passage to Tcncnflo, The Atheuic resumed her voyage on the. same day and experienced moderate to light easterly and north-easterly winds to 7 degrees north, when the weather changed to the south. The Equator was crossed on January 20th with a moderate southerly wind, which continued all .arrival at Capetown on January 28th. ’Three passengers disembarked and thirteen others joined tho vessel. The voyage was resumed on the 29th, and smooth seas and light varied winds, with about three or four days of fog, prevailed till arrival at Hobart at 5.20 a.m. on Tuesday last. Tho last stage ot the voyage was commenced at 7 o’clock on Tuesday night and fine weather 1 ’ prevailed till arrival at Wellington.
