outbreaks in the citt. The Fire Brigade was called to the premises of Messrs Bannatyne and Hunter, at the corner of Victoria and Allen streets, at 10.30 on Saturday morning. Some rubbish in the lift well had ignited, but was extinguished before any damage resulted. The brigade turned out with remarkable .smartness at about half-past 8 yesterday morning, and by its fine work saved a particularly inflammable neighbourhood from a serious conflagration. A two-storey wood and iron building at the rear of 105, Lamb ton qnay, occupied by ; James Markey, cabinetmaker, and owned by J. S. Evans, was found to be on fire, and serious damage was done to the portion used as a workshop, although the brigade did not allow the flames to spread". The building is uninsured. but the contents are insured for £SO in the Commercial Union office. At 10.33 yesterday morning the brigade was called; to the Kia Ora Galvanising Works, .at‘4, Little Taranaki street. It proved to be a false alarm, owing to an unusual amount of smoke issuing from the chimneys at the works.
