SATURDAY’S OUTINGS
GARDEN FETE AT KARORI. Despite the many counter attractions, city and suburban, the garden fete, arranged by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Mary’s Church, drew a considerable gathering of visitors to tho beautiful grounds of Mr and Dr PlattsMills at Karori on Saturday afternoon. Tho strong muster of Karori residents was augmented by many town visitors, including Bishop and Mrs Wallis and Miss Ashcroft, who drove out. To the town dwellers, accustomed to flagged pavements and congested spaces, the outing was particularly enjoyable. Afternoon tea was dispensed on tho edge of tho large lawn, -where tho feet sank noiselessly in tihe lush emerald grass, and the water-lily ponds in tho centre, and tho tinkling rill ancar, hidden beneath bowers of tree fern, cabbage palm, and other semi-tropical foliage, along with the encircling shade trees and dark holly hedges, contributed a deliciously cool effect—very grateful on so warm an afternoon. Mrs Blinsell, assisted by , Mesdames Herdsou and Caldwell and Miss Kemp, were tire presiding geniuses of the tea table. On the opposite corner of the lawn was the guild work stall in charge of Mesdaines Waters, Cook, and Bailey. - The tennis court and croquet lawn were occupied throughout the afternoon, hut tho majority of the visitors preferred tho less fatiguing pleasure of exploring tho beautiful and extensive grounds; threading tho maze of terraced paths winding along tho shrubberied bill face, and opening out into wonderful floral vistas; admiring tlbo miniature picturesque lake; tho rosery, whore the last roses of summer bloomed sturdily; the dahlia plot beginning to show vivid splashes of .colour; tho greenhouses, and all the other etceteras which go to the making of this ideal spot. Mrs Wallis wore a black and white striped gown, with vest of lace and a black toquo with a white bird of paradise plume. Dr Platts-Mills was distingue in a gown of chequered pale fawn marquisette over blue, tho crossover bodice revealing a vest of cream net with silk passementerie in delicate colourings and tho waist confined with a gold girdle; her large violet ottoman silk picture hat was finished with a cluster of shaded heliotrope plumes, Mrs ■ Hansell wore a black costume with Chino silk facings and a pretty lhat massed with deep crimson roses. A recent bride, Mrs Burnett (nee Miss Otterson) wore floral chiffon voile over pink silk with pink strappings and touches, and a cream hat trimmed with golden brown. Mrs Henderson was handsomely gowned in black with a Spanish lace scarf and a small black be-plumed hat. Mrs Andrew Wylie wore an elegant black and white striped costume and white hat. Mrs Platts, dainty white embroidered linen costume and rose trimmod hat. Mrs Tabutcau was in black taffeta, with a cream lace scarf and black hat. Mrs Simpson in a white linen gown, sapphire-blue plumed hat, and feather boa. Tho vicar (Rev. Mr Hansell) and all concerned were well satisfied with the financial result of the fete, which will be a sensible addition to tho £IOOO already gathered towards the funds for the proposed new church,
