SCHOOL DIVISIONS AT NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW
(Palmerston Correspondent). The Mauawatu-A. .and P. Association is issuing printed extracts from its schedule xor tne next National Daily Show, to be held on June 22nd to 25tn, 1900, dealing with the schools divisions. Tho committee has completely altered •the system and , conditions irom previous years, and the regulations and prizes and subsidies, now offered should prove a nreat encouragement and incentive to both sen col teachers and their charges to make comprehensive displays. Following are the classes specially provided for school garden competitions : Exhibits must be the bona fide produce from the school garden belonging to the exhibiting school, and a certificate to that effect supplied at time of entry by the head teacher and chairman of school committee. All entries must be in the name of the school. Prize money Ito be remitted to the chairman ot school committee, and may only be expended in school garden prizes. All exhibits should bo clean and fresh, and correctly named on cards.
Division for display of the results of garden experiments and Nature study collections undertaken during the current year, embracing products .of the soil, observation charts and other details carried out by tho school illustrating the syllabus prescribed by the Board of Education for the district in which the school it situated. Exhibit to fill 8 feet frontage by 4 feet deep with wall backing. 'A subsidy of £2 10s .will bo paid to the schoolmaster of each school making a suitable display. With the object of encouraging neat and j udiciously-arranged educational displays of the exhibits to the school bays, the prize of £lO donated by Mr J. E. Nathan, of London, will bo awarded as followslst, .£4; 2nd, £3; 3rd, £2; 4th,
Prizes of ss, Ist, and 2s 6d, 2nd. are offered for the following classes:—Rota, toes, 71b; 4 cabbages; 4 carrots, 4 parsnips; onions, 71b; 4 mangolds, 4 turnips; j beet. Entry is free. Tho following natural history classes are provided for open competition, but schools can, of course, also compete:— Collection of dried grasses, grown in the provincial districts of Wellington, Hawke's Bay, or Taranaki. The method of mounting, labelling, and general appearance of the collection to be taken into consideration in awarding tho prizes. Collection of injurious New Zealand weeds, grown in -the above districts. The method of mounting, labelling, and general appearance ot the collection to bo taken into consideraiticn, in awarding the prizes. ‘ Collection of insects, injurious to agriculture and horticulture. The method of mounting, labelling and general appearance of tho collection to be taken into consideration ifn awarding the prizes. - ... Three prizes in each elms will be given —.£2, £l, and 10s. - ,
