MOVEMENT OF POPULATION

QUINQUENNIAL RETURN, 1904-8.

A return compiled by the RegistrarGeneral shows the following movement of population for five years:—

The Maori population (which is excluded from the table) was in 1906 47,731 persons, and that of the annexed Pacific Islands' 12,340 persons, excluding 776 absentees at labour abroad. In the year 1904 the net increase from abroad after deducting the number of persons who left New Zealand, was 10,355, and in 1905 9302. In 1900 the excess of arrivals over departures rose to 12,848. The Exhibition contributed to this result. , In 1907 the net gain from outside the Dominion, was the smallest for five years (5730), mainly on account of a more equal interchange of people with Australia and departure of persons who. had visited the Exhibition. The largest gain from overseas during the' quinquennium was in 1908—14,261 persons. rfew Zealand gained in the period 1904-8, according to returns, 02,496 persons from abroad, after deducting those who departed. The natural increase of births over deaths shows a rise over the first three years of those dealt with in the table. It was. however, smaller for 1907 than for 1906 on account of an exceptionally heavy mortality in the later year. The total excess'of births is 78,143 for the quinquennium under observation, and for the year 1908 the figures are 16,897; but the death-rate for 1908 was 9.57 per 1000 persons living, against 10.95 in 1907. The two sources of increasing population each yielded a larger number of people in the year 1908 than in 1907, the result toeing that the population increased at the rate of 3.36 per cent, in 1903, while the rate was only 2.28 in 1907. -
