HIS DEATH ANNOUNCED. By Telegraph—Press 'Association—Copyright. NEW YORK, December 28. Mr Claus Spreckels, of the Oceanic Steamship Compahy of San Francisco, is dead. It is supposed that ho has left a fortune amounting to ten millions sterling. , ■ Tho late Mr Claus, Spreckles was very well known by name in New Zealand by reason of his connection with the old San Francisco mail service, which ceased running over two years ago. Ko was born at Latfistadt, in Hanover, in 1823, and went to, the United, States in 1846. At first he was employed at Charleston, in. South Carolina, and New YorK, but in 1856 he went to San Francisco, where he conducted a store and later a brewery. In 1863 "be established tho Bay Sugar Refinery, procuring his. raw material from Hawaii. The business soon expanded, Mr Spreckles 'inventing new refining processes,; acquiring sugar properties in and building new refineries. In addition, he acquired possession of a beet-sugar farm of 1500 acres and factories in California, and became a large owner in the Oceanic Steamship Company. The San, Francisco mail service ceased running in June, 1906, tho Sonoma making her last trip that month. Prior to that the service had been dislocated for some time, owing to a series of breakedown on the vessels.
