THE ALFREDTON-WEBER ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MASTERTON, November 27. One of the worst pieces of road in Wiellijngton province is probably the seven miles of the Alfredton-Weber road between Waitewhiti stream anti tho Watrfalls, about fifteen miles north of Alfredton. ft has not been metalled, and the result of some fairly heavy traffic through the winter has been disastrous. A special effort is necessary to put the road in order, and the settlers have practically agreed to provide JiiOUtf for that purpose. This will be subsidised by the Government on a all for ill basis, and. the money will be promptly available when the local contribution is made up. Further norm, the. road to Rakaunui is in an exceedingly bad state owing to slips, and the Alasterton County Council is unable to keep it open m consequence of scarcity of funds. The local M.P., Air Hogg, is endeavouring to secure a grant of £IOO from the Government towards making the road again passable for vehicles. Mr Alexander Alurray, a member of the Alasterton County Council, had an unfortunate experience opposite his residence at Waihoki Valley road a few days ago. Some culverts had been washed away, the road being tii a dangerous condition. Mr Murray's trap fell over an embankment, and he sustained severe wounds on the head, besides suffering from shock. He has been ordered to take a complete rest for some time. DISTRICT COURT. At the District Court to-day, before Judge Haselden, Dalgety and Companysued A. AlcKenzie, of Feathcrston, for the sum of .£236 5s for sheep sold on forward delivery. Mr D. K. Logon appeared for the plaintiff, and there was no appearance of defendant. John B. Hoodie, manager at” Alasterton for the plaintiff company, was called to formally prove the debt. Witness said he had made several efforts to get the amount owing, and defendant had promised to* pay, hut had not done so. Judgment was entered for plaintiff for the full amount with .costs .£8 15s. In bankruptcy, his Honor released the Deputy Official Assignee from- further administration of the estates of the following bankrupts: —Joseph Dockery, Greytown, painter; John George Hayes, Alasterton, labourer; James William Hallet, Alasterton, painter; Fraser Aland Ross, Mauriceville, hotelkeeper; ■Edwin IV. .Gunther, Masterton, labourer ; Joe Chong Lee, Alartinborough, fruiterer; Henry O. Ramsden, Alartinborough, storekeeper; Robert McCartie, Alartinborough, painter; Frederick A. Harcombe, Alasterton, storekenor; William Craighead, Alasterton, tailor; Robert 6. Williams, Alasterton, saddler; Tobias Miller, Alasterton, herbalist. William Roland Cook, painter, of Carterton, was granted his discharge from bankruptcy. Daniel AlcFarlane, tobacconist, who filed in September, was publicly examined, and admitted contracting £lßl worth of debts in six months of his business, in which to commence he borrowed £2OO from his father. He also admitted making np, after filing, a book purporting to show his weekly takings for six months. The Court concluded its sitting in two hours. LOWER VALLEY. FEATHERSTON, November 27. The following promotions have been made in the Carterton Rifle Volunteers; —Lance-Corporal Judd to lance-sergeant, Lance-Corporal Morgan to lance-serge-ant, Private Green to lance-sergeant, it has been decided to hold two daylight paid parades shortly, and class bring will commence at the Belvedere range on Saturday. The examination of officers takes place on Wednesday. A meeting of the. Jvahutara River Board was held in Poatherston to-day, all Uie members being present. The returning officer notified the election of Mr H. Willis to the vacancy caused by Mr Pearce’s non-attendance. It was reported that the poll on the JBOOO loan had been successfully carried, and it was decided to instruct Mr G. LaingMeason to prepare the plans, in order to call tenders for the erection of a stop-bank.
