HARBOUR FATALITY
RESCUED MAN SUCCUMBS, A REMARKABLE CASE. At midday yesterday, whilst the stevedore.-; who had been working cargo at the Manuka wore having lunch, a sudden, cry of “Man overboard" was raised. Close to the wharf, at berth No. 14, ,1 envois quay, near the bow of the Manuka, a man was seen floating face downward on the water. Without waiting to divest himself of any of his clothes. Air Opio Jones, an extra Customs officer, dived off the wharf and seized the man, who was unconscious, and held him up until a rope was thrown to him. The unconscious man was hauled on to the wharf, and first aid was rendered until Dr Gilmer arrived. The doctor ordered his removal to the hospital, whore he recovered consciousness, and gave his name as William tor” uson. He was unable to give any particulars about himself or bin friends, except that he was a fireman out of employment. Ferguson then collapsed, and succumbed at 4.20. p.m. It is believed that he was sleeping behind some barrels on the whnrf and had rolled over the side. This is the second occasion on which life has been saved in Wellington harbour by Mr Opjo Jones, who is a son of Captain .T. Jones, of the ferry steamer Dnchess. About five years ago Mr Jones swam some distance and rescued a seaman who fell off the barque Hornby Castle at the wool' wharf. Although Air Jones ruined a suit of clothes he did not receive any recompense for his heroism. Yesterday another suit of clothes and a silver watch were spoiled. ' Ferguson had JJI Is 4d in his possession. The police are desirous of hearing from his relations. An inquest will be held to-day.
