WRECKED BARQUE

ON A REEF AT SURPRISE ISLAND. THE DANGER OP BEING BROKEN UP. PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, November 27. The barque Aleida, bound from Dunedin to Surprise- Island in ballast, went ashore on the inner reef at Surprise Island on October 28th, about 7 p.m. The vessel had safely negotiated the passage into the lagoon in a strong easterly wind, but grounded while tacking to gain the anchorage. AH efforts to get her off proved unavailing. On October 31st tho vessel .'lining a leak, and tho water was gaining, despite efforts at the pumps. The crew was commanded to salve the yards and gear. The captain signalled that there were no available means to get tbe barque off. Information per tho Ermpreza. which arrived to-day. is to tho effect that the vessel is settled in a reef, and a hurricane might break her up. She is partly insured.
