Advice was received that the Government steamer liinemoa was at the Cape Maria lighthouse yesterday. Captain Rogers, formerly of the barque Laira, has taken up his hew duties as wharf superintendent at Wellington for the Blackball Coal Company, in succession to the late Captain H. Hayes. A LOAD OF CHEESE CASES. The coastal steamer Cygnet arrived at WellmjKoa last evening from Lyttelton on her annual trip to 'Wellington to load ■ cheese cases for th© dairy produce factories on Banks Peninsula. Dawson, of the Union ComnanyV collier Waipori, reports that on t November 34th on th© passage from westport to Weilintgon, when between Karamea and Rocks Point (in latitude 41 deg. 10 sec. south and longitude . deg. east) a largo log was passed floating near the vessel. Captain Dawson expressed the opinion that with the Bet of the current the log would probably drift - in a northerly direction. The obstacle would cause considerable damage if it came in contact with a propeller. MAPOURIKA DUE TO-MORROW. The Union Company's steamer Mapourika was one day late in leaving • Wellington this week for the West Coast. . She arrived at Greymouth at 9.30 a.m. yesterday, sailed on the return trip last evening : at 10 o'clock, and is due here to-morrow evening from Nelson. SCUTTLED IN COOK STRAIT. HULK JEAN PIERRE. Th©' Blackball Coal Company's old ’ wooden hulk Jean Pierre, which has done service as a hulk at Wellington since 1894, .was sent to her last resting place last; evening in Cook Strait. The Blackball,Company's collier Ngahero towed the hulk out, and as the scuttling holes had'been, bored in her, all that had to be done was to knock the plugs out- The Jean Pierre was bought by the Blackball Company in 1894 as she lay barque-rigged in Adelaide, where she had been condemned. She was fixed up temporarily and loaded a cargo of coal at Newcastle for Wellington, where she was dismantled and converted into a hulk For some considerable time the old French vessel has been, showing signs of wear, and was unable to , be fully loaded for that reason. THE GREYMOUTH DREDGE. The Greymouth Harbour Board's now dredge Mawhera, which left Renfrew on October 23rd for Lyttelton, was recently launched by Messrs William Simons and Co., possesses many special features. She is of the twin-setew stem well combined buckdt suction and discharging type. She was launched with till machinery complete, ready for work, under the supervision of Mr Harry Raymond, inspecting* engineer to the Greymouth Harbour Board. The hull and machinery have been built to Lloyd'® highest class. The buckdt ladder is arranged so that th© bucket dan dredge close up to quay walls, and also cut out in dry land a channel for th© dredger's own flotation. The discharging pump is arranged to receive and deliver through -a long length of floating and shore pipes. The propelling power is provided by two sets of tripe-expansion, surface-condensing, engines, each driving its own propeller. Steam is supplied from two steam boilers for a worldng pressure of 1691 b., The propelling engines are aleo arranged for driving the bucket chain at two different speeds, and the suction and discharging pumps either in conjunction with th© buckets or separately, as required. Th© engine auxiliary outfit include independent automatic feed pumps, bilge pumJps, service pomps, circulating pumps, condenser, feed’heater, and ff/ter.
