STARVING ISLANDERS.
PLAQUE-STEICKEN PEOPLE IN THE AZOBES. EITOUS SCENES. Owing to the isolation of the plaguestricken island of Fnyal, in the Azores, the inhabitants of the town, of Horta are in a starving condition. The people on the island of Pico, moved with sympathy, sent a boat with food of every kind, but on reaching Horta the authorities refused to allow the contents to be landed. The quay was guarded by troops, but the indignant and hungry inhabitants, arming themselves with weapons of every kind—rifles, fowlingpieces, knives, and stones—threw themselves upon the troops. After 30 minntes' fierce fight the soldiers had to surrender. Amid thundering cheers the boat was unloaded and the food was distributed. After tho people had appeased their appetitios they became riotous, broke into the prisons, and set free many of tho prisoners.
